THE PERFECT 5-DAY MADEIRA ROAD TRIP
If you’re heading to Madeira and want to see a little bit of everything, hiring a car is definitely the way to go.
Five days is enough to experience the mountains, waterfalls, tiny villages, dramatic coastline and some of the island’s best views — without feeling like you’re constantly rushing from one place to the next.
Here’s how we’d spend five days on the island:
DAY 1 — FUNCHAL & THE SOUTH
Start in Funchal and take a wander through the Old Town before heading along the coast.
Stop in Câmara de Lobos, take in the views from Cabo Girão and then continue towards Ponta do Sol.
Take your time, enjoy the scenery and, if you can, stay for sunset. And of course, no first day in Madeira is complete without trying a traditional poncha, but drink responsibly.
DAY 2 — WATERFALLS & PORTO MONIZ
Time to head into the green heart of Madeira.
Explore the 25 Fontes trail, drive across the beautiful Paul da Serra plateau and, if you have time, wander through the magical Fanal Forest.
Then make your way to Porto Moniz for a swim in the famous natural volcanic pools. It’s the perfect way to finish the day.
DAY 3 — THE NORTH COAST
The north coast is where Madeira really shows off.
Drive towards Seixal and stop to admire the black-sand beach and huge cliffs surrounding it. Continue on to São Vicente before making your way towards Santana.
Take a look at the traditional Madeira houses and enjoy the slower pace of life in the north.
DAY 4 — MOUNTAINS & NUN’S VALLEY
Set the alarm early and head up to Pico do Arieiro for sunrise. If the weather is clear, the views are unforgettable.
If you’re feeling adventurous, take a mountain walk before heading down towards Curral das Freiras, also known as Nun’s Valley.
This is a great place to stop for lunch and try some of Madeira’s famous chestnut dishes before continuing towards Machico for a more relaxed afternoon.
DAY 5 — PONTA DE SÃO LOURENÇO
Finish your road trip with something completely different.
The landscape around Ponta de São Lourenço is rugged, wild and feels a world away from the lush green mountains.
Take the walk along the peninsula, enjoy the Atlantic views and stop in Caniçal for lunch before making your way back to Funchal.
Then it’s time for one final sunset, a good dinner and probably one last poncha before the trip comes to an end.
WHY HIRE A CAR?
Honestly, having a car makes exploring Madeira so much easier.
You can stop whenever you see a view you like, take the scenic route, discover little places along the way and explore the island completely at your own pace.
For complete peace of mind during your trip, we recommend hiring your car with Vanity Blend. It’s one less thing to worry about, so you can concentrate on enjoying the roads, the views and everything Madeira has to offer.
Five days, one incredible island and plenty of reasons to come back.
