Car insurance is legally required in Portugal. Not having insurance is a serious offense and comes with hefty fines. If you get in an accident and do not have insurance, you will be required to pay for the damages of both parties out of pocket. All vehicles must undergo regular inspection by official test centres (like the MOT test) to ensure the car is legal and roadworthy with safe emissions.
The IPO (Inspecção Périodica Obrigatória) is the roadworthiness test of a motor vehicle in Portugal. (It is also known as the Inspecção Tecnica Périodica and the Inspecção Automóvel Obrigatória.)
IPO tests are compulsory and may only be undertaken by a test centre (Centro de Inspecção) authorised by the Instituto da Mobilidade e dos Transportes Terrestres (IMTT). The tests serve to ensure that the vehicle is not a hazard on the road. It is compulsory for a vehicle in use to be roadworthy.
- All cars and motorbikes over 250cc with more than four years of age must be inspected and tested at an approved garage test centre every two years until the age of seven. From the eighth year onwards, the vehicle must be tested annually. There are no exemptions for classic cars. A vehicle may be tested 3 months prior to the due date.
- Light Goods Vehicles (LGV) must be inspected two years following the issuing of the first licence plate and annually thereafter.
- Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV) must be tested one year following the issuing of the first licence plate and annually thereafter until the eight year. At this point it must be tested twice yearly.

A IPO (Inspecção Périodica Obrigatória) é a inspeção técnica de um veículo a motor em Portugal. (Também é conhecida como Inspeção Técnica Périodica e Inspeção Automóvel Obrigatória.)
Os te**es IPO são obrigatórios e só podem ser realizados por um centro de te**es (Centro de Inspecção) autorizado pelo Instituto da Mobilidade e dos Transportes Terrestres (IMTT). Os te**es servem para garantir que o veículo não é um perigo na estrada. É obrigatório que um veículo em uso esteja em condições de circular.
- Todos os carros e motos acima de 250cc com mais de quatro anos de idade devem ser inspecionados e testados em um centro de te**es de garagem aprovado a cada dois anos até a idade de sete anos. - Os Veículos Pesados de Mercadoria (HGV) devem ser testados um ano após a emissão da primeira placa e anualmente a partir de então até o oitavo ano. Neste ponto, deve ser testado duas vezes por ano.

A road accident is necessarily shocking, so it is essential to keep calm and act thoughtfully so that help is organized quickly and efficiently:

• Put on your self-reflective vest and make sure your passengers do it too,

• Evacuate the vehicle on the right side and keep everyone as far away from the road as possible; If you are on the highway go behind the security fence,

• Pave the warning triangle at least 30 meters before the accident site; at night, you can also light the scene with an electric lamp. You must be visible without taking unnecessary risks!

ALERT THE AUTHORITIES IN THE MOST DETAILED WAY POSSIBLE
To contact the emergency services, preferably use the emergency call stations. If you use your mobile phone you must contact 112 (European number).

Describe as precisely as possible the location and circumstances of the accident, the number and condition of the injured and the type and number of vehicles involved in the accident. The emergencies were contacted? You must now contact your insurance, at the number communicated to you with your contract.
CONTACT YOUR INSURANCE
In the event of a road accident in Portugal, it is necessary to fill the "Declaração Amigável de Acidente Automóvel" (DAAA), the equivalent of the amicable report.

You will not have any other solution than to call the police in case of dispute or categorical refusal of the other driver to complete the DAAA. In the case where one or more of the drivers does not have an available form, the declaration may be made on any piece of paper (it must of course be signed by all parties involved).

If there are witnesses, carefully note their names and full contact information. If the driver has no insurance (which is illegal), write down the registration number of his vehicle and immediately forward it to the police and your insurer who will take the action. Finally, send the insurance claim to your insurer as soon as possible! Indeed deadlines are respected to be compensated to the maximum.

As you will have understood in Portugal, the procedures are very similar to those that can be found in other European countries. The most important thing is to have your vest self-reflective, insurance to date and especially to know how to keep calm.

We are feeling so grateful for the lovely rain we are currently experiencing, but keep in mind initial rain fall makes the road very slippery as the mud and oil on dry roads combines with the water to form a rather slippery layer.
Tires should have plenty of tread depth to evacuate standing water from between the road surface and your tire.

You must have a copy of your driver’s license, your IDP if it applies to you, proof that you own the vehicle (such as the registration certificate), and proof of insurance. If you’re driving someone else’s car, you should have written confirmation from the owner that you’re allowed to drive the vehicle. Alternatively, if you have a car rental, you should have a copy of the rental agreement.
