Lithium marine batteries are a fantastic choice for boaters because they offer several advantages over traditional lead-acid batteries.
Lightweight & Compact – They weigh about half as much as lead-acid batteries, which helps improve boat performance and fuel efficiency.

Longer Lifespan – They can last up to 10 times longer than lead-acid batteries, reducing the need for frequent replacements2.

Higher Efficiency – Lithium batteries provide consistent power without voltage drops, ensuring smooth operation of marine electronics.

Faster Charging – They charge much quicker than lead-acid batteries, minimizing downtime between trips.

Greater Depth of Discharge – Unlike lead-acid batteries, lithium batteries can be discharged to a much lower level without damage, giving you more usable capacity.

Low Maintenance – They require almost no upkeep compared to lead-acid batteries, making them more convenient.

Environmentally Friendly – They generate less waste and have a smaller carbon footprint, making them a greener choice.

Charging batteries properly requires administering the right current at the correct voltage. The original instructions for your charging equipment should be referenced for proper charging. Here is a list of helpful items to remember when charging.

Become familiar with and follow the instructions issued by the charger
Batteries should be charged after each period of
Lead-acid batteries do not develop a memory and do not need to be fully discharged before
Charge flooded batteries only in well-ventilated areas. Keep sparks away from charging or recently charged
Verify charger voltage settings are correct for the type of battery you are charging (Flooded, AGM or GEL).
Correct the charging voltage to compensate for temperatures above and below25°C/77°F.
Compensation for battery temperature above or below 25°C/77°F

Subtracting 005 volts per cell for each 1°C (0.003 volts per 1°F) above 25°C or,
adding 0.005 volts per cell for each 1°C (0.003 volts per 1°F) below 25°C
Check the water level on flooded batteries before and after charging (see the Watering section).
Tighten all vent caps on flooded batteries before
Prevent overcharging the batteries. Overcharging causes excessive gassing (water breakdown), heat buildup, and battery aging in flooded batteries and will dry out the electrolyte and damage VRLA DRY CELLAGM and GELL
Prevent undercharging the batteries. Undercharging causes acid stratification in wet flooded batteries.
Please do not charge a frozen battery; allow it to thaw at room temperature.
Avoid charging at temperatures above50°C/125°F if possible.

Here is some information on what AGM batteries are and how they benefit a bit more than your regular GEL battery.

An AGM battery is a lead-acid electric storage battery that has the electrolyte (acid) immobilized and absorbed into a woven glass fibred sponge-like material called an Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM):

Uses various grid thicknesses relative to application and cost requirements
Uses various Positive and Negative Active Material amounts and densities depending upon the application's needs.
Thin grid + low active material ratio & low active material density used in general purpose starting/float and light duty cyclic use.
Thick grid + high active material ratio & high active material density used in purpose-built Semi-Traction Industrial and General-Purpose Deep Cycle.
It is sealed using special valve-regulated pressure valves and should never be opened.
Quality AGM models use individual cell valves with built-in flame arrestors - IMPORTANT.
Typically uses Lead Calcium-tin metal alloy grids.
It is maintenance-free with proper charging controls.
Has its entire electrolyte absorbed in separators consisting of a sponge-like mass of woven glass fibred material.
Acid-to-active material ratios, along with acid-specific gravities may vary according to application and market costing requirements. *** User/integrator should note and verify.
It uses a recombination reaction to prevent the escape of hydrogen and oxygen gases usually lost in a flooded lead-acid battery (particularly in any cycling applications).
It is no spillable.
It is better than GEL for high-vibration applications because of the cell compression provided by the absorbed glass mat.
It is better than GEL for high-rate discharge applications because of its lower internal resistance.
It is better than GEL in low-temperature performance.
It is generally compatible with vehicle alternator voltages.
It does not suffer as greatly from acid stratification compared to flooded battery technology because AGM technology completely absorbs and constrains the acid in a fibred separator making it more difficult for the acid to diffuse from the water to accumulate at the bottom of the battery’s cells. This restrained diffusion has been proven to slow the stratifying effect of gravity on battery acid in AGM battery technology. Acid Stratification is the #1 killer of flooded lead-acid batteries.
