In April, the last units of the Volkswagen Touran left the factory, ending the many-year production run of this popular van.

The automotive market in Europe is evolving dynamically, which means that in recent years we have had to say goodbye to many iconic model series, highly regarded both on the road and in workshops. The era of the Ford Mondeo or Fiat Punto has come to an end. Until recently, they were an absolute foundation of every mechanic’s daily work, and today? Today their production is already a thing of the past.

We have a challenge for you where workshop theory alone will probably not be enough - practical experience may also be needed. Some of you may be helped by the fact that the filters shown in the graphic (WL7514, WL7422 and WL7134) are among the most frequently installed WIX Filters oil filters. Without a doubt, however, today’s puzzle requires more than just the ability to use a catalogue.

The rules of the game are simple, but there are plenty of catches. What do you need to do?

The graphic shows 6 cars in specific specifications, but only 3 WIX Filters oil filters. Your task is to indicate precisely which filter fits which vehicle. But watch out! We have hidden two models on the car list for which none of the indicated filters will fit. Which cars are they? Can you identify them?

An additional difficulty is that one of the WIX Filters listed here fits as many as two of the listed models. What is more, this match is not as obvious as it might seem at first glance!

Every one of you surely knows very well that this small socket can dematerialize faster than any other piece of workshop equipment. It was there a moment ago, you had just had it in your hand, and now? When you need it most? Gone! And after all, it is precisely that unlucky 10 mm socket that is used to loosen half the components in a car. And it is the one that, out of pure spite, has this strange tendency to vanish into thin air (or under the hood) in the most inexplicable way.

It is true that the high dirt-holding capacity of WIX Filters protects the engine from invisible contaminants, but even our engineering cannot help with tools that disappear under mysterious circumstances. In such cases, all that remains is to hope for a miracle, or for a spare socket set. Do you have similar experiences? At WIX Filters, we place great emphasis on flow physics, especially during so-called cold starts. When the oil in the lubrication system is cold and thick, the resistance of the filter medium increases drastically. In such a situation, to ensure the engine receives sufficient oil, a bypass valve is essential; it must open at exactly the pressure specified by the engine manufacturer (the so-called delta P). This is the only way to ensure proper lubrication, even if it comes at the cost of a temporary flow of unfiltered oil.

Why are the precisely calibrated springs in WIX brand oil filters so important? Because they help determine:

• engine protection against operation without filtration – a spring that is too soft in cheap alternatives causes the filter to operate in bypass mode too frequently;
• bearing safety – a spring that is too stiff can block the flow of thick oil, leading to the breaking of the oil film on a frosty morning;
• precise calibration – every spring in WIX filters is adapted to the specifications of a particular engine, guaranteeing the perfect balance between purity and lubrication.

For drivers, the term "recently" can be remarkably broad. However, the actual mass of contaminants trapped between the filter pleats quickly verifies any story about how they changed the filter just yesterday, and even before lunch. With this in mind, we have prepared a short guide for you to help understand what really lies behind the popular declarations made during car servicing. For instance:

• The filter was changed "not more than a month ago"? The grey coating and clogged pores of the material suggest that this month must have lasted at least six months.
• The cabin filter was fitted "just now"? Between the layers of the filter medium lies a veritable sandbox that would put a local playground to shame.
• A new filter was put in "recently"? Then why have you just discovered a new, thriving ecosystem inside the filter housing?

Regularly checking the state of filtration is more important than relying on the not-always-reliable "testimony" of drivers. While the high capacity of WIX Filters allows them to trap a great deal of dirt, protecting the vehicle – and its occupants – from the effects of pollutants, everything has its limits. In modern automotive mechanics, the battle for engine durability (and not only) is increasingly fought on a microscopic scale – so small that you won't be able to see your biggest opponents with the naked eye. 🔎

To illustrate how small the contaminants are, let’s use an example: a human hair typically has a thickness between 100 and 50 microns. Our eyes can see objects slightly smaller, down to about 40 microns. Smaller particles are beyond our reach without special tools.

Meanwhile, the most destructive particles for cylinder walls or bearings are even smaller, sometimes just a few or even several microns in size. These microscopic threats are also trapped by the filter. This makes our products effectively capture particles invisible to the naked eye without blocking the free flow of oil.
