Combining elements from different, far-apart sources can deliver very different results. Especially in automotive. But this particular car is proof that sometimes a mix of solutions borrowed from various brands can work out really well. 😉

Saying that this particular vehicle is a true mix of different automotive solutions is not an exaggeration at all. Here we have styling inspired by this brand’s 1970s and 1980s models, a Ford platform, and PSA powertrains driving the engine lineup. Although when it comes to the latter, in this specific example we chose a Ford-derived 2.0 FlexFuel engine, valued for its strong power-to-fuel-consumption ratio. ⛽

We mentioned the styling earlier. And for a reason — the photo we selected here shows the car from the rear. A defining feature of this hatchback, which debuted in 2006, is its heavily glazed rear tailgate extending over the taillights.

And since we’re already talking about the trunk, this is definitely not the strongest point of the car we’re looking for today. There isn’t much space, and the rear seats aren’t exactly generous either. 😕 On the plus side, you do get the solid build quality and relatively low failure rate typical of vehicles from this brand. In everyday workshop service, hard facts and specifics matter. We know that well, and every day we make sure that the filters we produce do a solid, effective job and provide proper protection for the vehicle. That is why we continuously test both our products and competitor products, comparing them side by side.

And today, we want to share one of those comparisons with you.

We put our PP 831/1 fuel filter and a competitor equivalent under the microscope. And after many hours of painstaking, demanding testing, we can confidently say that the FILTRON product protects the vehicle better than the filter from another brand.

We won’t just leave it at that. Here are the details:

- In the crush pressure test, our filter withstood nearly twice the pressure of the competitor equivalent.*

If you had to rate the average condition of the cars that come onto your lifts, which number on this scale would you choose? 🧐

As we know, vehicles that arrive at the workshop can be in a truly wide range of conditions. Sometimes the job is limited to routine service tasks, oil and filter replacement, and a quick look at the suspension. 👍 Very often, it’s also the classic repairs connected with everyday vehicle operation. In other words, the workshop’s bread and butter: brake pads, brake discs, stabilizer links, bushings. On the other hand... there’s no shortage of “last chance” cases either, where the repair feels like resuscitation and bringing the car back from the dead. ⚠️

And what does it look like in your day-to-day work? Do routine inspections and fairly standard repairs dominate, or is your workshop more like an automotive emergency room, where every day is a battle for the vehicle’s life? 🚨

Which of these cars does the AP 139/2 not fit? 🔍

We have a feeling the answer might not be that simple. 😉 Even though we're talking about one of FILTRON’s most widely distributed air filters, commonly used in workshops. In fact, we’d argue that the filter’s popularity is the main source of difficulty here.

At first glance, AP 139/2 could appear to fit each of the vehicles listed. ☑️ All models are representatives of the VAG group. The majority also share similar engines. And even if you think one is different, beware: selecting an answer based on an unusual power unit—which, on closer inspection, may not be that unusual after all—can be misleading.

So it’s hard to find an obvious clue indicating that AP 139/2 does not fit a specific vehicle. Solving this puzzle requires solid automotive knowledge grounded in hands-on workshop experience. 🔧

Which cars are the easiest to change the cabin (cabin) filter in? Many of you will probably point to Toyota. 🇯🇵

And rightly so. In the vast majority of models from that manufacturer, the cabin filter installation is quick and straightforward. You just remove the glove box and after a moment you have convenient access to the filter pocket. However, there is an installation trap here that is easy to fall into. ⚠️

It concerns the “UP” marking with an upward arrow placed on the plastic cover of the filter housing. ⬆️ Someone who doesn’t frequently mount filters in Toyotas might assume this indicates the cabin filter should be installed with the printed arrow pointing up. That’s a quite logical conclusion when looking at the mentioned cover.

The catch is that “UP” on the housing indicates the direction of installation, not the direction of airflow into the vehicle cabin. The arrow on the filter itself should correspond to the direction of airflow. And there are Toyota models where, although the housing cover shows “UP”, the cabin filter must be mounted with the arrow pointing down. This is the case for example in Avensis III (T27), Yaris III, and the third-generation RAV4.

So remember, when installing the filter do not rely solely on markings that may seem obvious but can mean something entirely different. Also don’t forget that the installation direction of the cabin filter must match the direction of airflow. How to check that? There are two ways:

- Put your hand into the empty filter pocket with the blower on (you’ll feel where the airflow is coming from). 💨

- Or even easier: check the video replacement instructions for cabin filters on our YouTube channel , where we show the direction of airflow for a given vehicle. 🎬

If you knew someone looking for a car that isn’t particularly pretty or sporty, but is fairly small, very practical and remarkably spacious for its dimensions, the vehicle we’ve hidden today would be an excellent suggestion. 👍

Admittedly, that suggestion would have been far more current several years ago, since production of the II — decidedly pivotal — generation of this model ended in 2008, yet despite the years this car still defends itself with reliability and practicality.

The flat fuel tank we mentioned plays a major role in achieving that practicality. A distinctive feature of this vehicle is an uncommon flexibility in configuring the rear seats for a car of this size: you can lift the seat cushion by 90 degrees, fold down the rear backrest, or even completely stow the rear row, which then gives you a huge — and importantly — completely flat load area. 😮 To enable that, the engineers had to change the shape of the fuel tank and move it forward under the front row of seats. ⛽ It’s a rarely used solution in cars, but in this case it brought significant benefits.

So, what about the rest of the car? After all, even the most practical interior does not make a car good if it’s powered by an unsuccessful engine. Here there’s no cause for concern. 😊 The model we’re looking for today was offered with robust 1.2 and 1.4‑litre engines, the latter being the more popular. With 83 horsepower under the hood it certainly wasn’t a speed demon or a dynamics king, but it delivered what users of this segment primarily needed: reliability. And that engine certainly delivered on that front.

And when encountering a “classic” cellulose pleated air filter in a Japanese or Korean car, should we consider that unusual? 🤔

Well, the answer is a bit paradoxical — both yes and no. Yes, because for years it has been common that Asian vehicles are equipped with panel air filters made from synthetic non-woven media. It’s especially in Japanese and Korean brands that you typically see air filters in the characteristic molded panel format. ℹ️

No, because today a car from Korea or Japan does not automatically mean it will have a synthetic non-woven filter. ❌ In many Toyota models, for example, traditional cellulose paper air filters have been used for years.
An important factor is that regional distinctions have blurred in modern automotive engineering. 🌏 The car industry is global: international groups have formed and manufacturers share technical solutions. A vehicle carrying a Japanese badge is not necessarily designed and engineered entirely in Japan. A good example are newer Mitsubishi and Nissan models — they share a great deal with Renault vehicles and, like the French cars, use classic European-style paper air filters. 🙂

So today you can’t simply assume: Asian car = synthetic non-woven air filter.

Was it one of those visits featuring a truly spectacular car? 🤩 For example, a heavy, massive cruiser fit for a head of state, or a speed demon you’d only seen in movies?

Or do you remember a service for a different reason? A seemingly ordinary car that’s actually very rare on local roads? Or a vehicle that stood out not for performance or luxury but for its peculiar looks and equally unusual construction? Or worse — a road “clunker” in such a state that the entire workshop crew had to see it with their own eyes? 🫣

Although workshop work can often be monotonous and repetitive, amid the steady flow of brake pad replacements, filter swaps, and timing jobs on a relatively limited range of models, every mechanic probably had a day when THAT distinctive, memorable car showed up. The visit and the work performed on it never leave your mind and stay with you throughout your career in the shop. 🔧
