📖When buying a car, one of the most important decisions is choosing the type of transmission. Each has its advantages and characteristics, and today we explain the main types so you know which one best fits your driving style.
✍️1. Manual Transmission
The classic and preferred by many drivers who enjoy feeling total control of the car. Use a clutch and shift lever that you must manually operate to select the right gear.
👉 Advantages:
✔️ Greater control over the vehicle.
✔️ Generally cheaper and easier to repair.
✔️ Better fuel efficiency on some models.
❌ Downside:
❌ Requires more skill and practice to handle.
❌ It can be uncomfortable in heavy traffic.
✍️2. Automatic Transmission
This type of transmission automatically changes gears without the need for a clutch. It's ideal for those looking for comfort and ease of driving.
👉 Advantages:
✔️ Easier and more comfortable driving.
✔️ Ideal for urban traffic and long trips.
✔️ Less clutch wear and tear (because it doesn't have one operated manually).
❌ Downside:
❌ It can be more expensive to maintain and repair.
❌ Some models consume more fuel than a manual.
✍️3. IMT stream
It's a type of manual transmission, but without the clutch pedal. The system uses sensors and actuators to make changes without the driver having to push an extra pedal.
👉 Advantages:
✔️ Manual-like handling feel, but without the clutch effort.
✔️ More comfortable in traffic compared to a traditional manual.
✔️ Generally more fuel efficient than a conventional automatic.
❌ Downside:
❌ It may not offer the same immediate response as a traditional manual.
❌ It's not yet so widespread in the market.
✍️4. CVT Transmission (Continuously Variable Transmission)
Instead of stationary gears, use a pulley system and belt to continuously adjust the transmission ratio, offering smoother acceleration.
👉 Advantages:
✔️ Increased fuel efficiency.
✔️ Extremely smooth driving with no sudden changes.
✔️ Fewer moving parts, which can reduce maintenance.
❌ Downside:
❌ You may feel less responsive in strong accelerations.
❌ Costly repairs if system fails.
✍️5. AMT Transmission (Automated Manual Transmission)
It's a manual transmission with an automated system that makes gears and operates the clutch for you. It's commonly found in more accessible cars.
👉 Advantages:
✔️ Less manufacturing cost than a traditional automatic.
✔️ Improve comfort compared to a pure manual.
✔️ It can be more fuel efficient than some automatics.
❌ Downside:
❌ Gears changes can feel slower or abrupt.
❌ It doesn't have the smoothness of a traditional automatic transmission or CVT.
✍️6. DCT Transmission (Dual-Clutch Transmission)
Also known as a dual-clutch transmission, it uses two automated clutches that operate together to perform ultra-fast gear shifts. It's found in high-performance sports cars.
👉 Advantages:
✔️ Extremely fast and smooth gear shifts.
✔️ Better fuel efficiency compared to some traditional automatics.
✔️ Excellent response and performance in acceleration.
❌ Downside:
❌ It can be costly to repair.
❌ In heavy traffic, you can feel less comfortable than a conventional automatic.
