LUMS - Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities & Social Sciences Official page of the Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences, LUMS

Welcome to the Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School for Humanities and Social Sciences at LUMS. We are the largest school at LUMS and pride ourselves on our world class faculty and thriving student life. In an age where ‘marketability’ has become a buzzword, driving many young men and women into the professions right after high school, we focus on providing our students with a broad-based education that l

ays a solid foundation for them to build their lives and careers on. Trained at leading universities of the world, and deeply engaged with local realities, our faculty members have transformed the way social sciences and humanities are taught in Pakistan. Their passion and commitment is reflected in the vibrant intellectual culture of the school, and translates into teaching that is truly transformative. Students start the programme by developing strong conceptual foundations across a range of subjects before graduating on to advanced, specialized courses that only our faculty can deliver. Equipped with an excellent liberal arts education, with specializations in economics, political science, sociology, anthropology, history, and literature in English, along with several joint majors, our students go on to stellar careers in academia, policy-making, politics, media, corporate sector, third sector, government and international organizations. However, as proud as we are of our students’ accomplishments, what gives us even greater satisfaction is the sensitivity, empathy and thoughtfulness that we are able to impart to them. Arriving just after high school, our students step into the world four years later as mature, engaged and reflective citizens, prepared to serve in the highest offices in public and private sectors.

We are excited to announce that Iman Nadeem (BSc. Political Science, Class of 2026) will be pursuing an MS in Environmental Policy and Planning at Tufts University this fall, where she has also received a scholarship and an RA-ship!

A note from Iman on this achievement:

"My time at MGSHSS was incredibly meaningful, not only because of the academic opportunities it provided, but also because of the people who made those opportunities possible. The professors were consistently kind, accommodating, and genuinely invested in their students. Their support gave me the confidence to pursue graduate studies, and my experience showed me just how far kindness can go in helping students grow and believe in themselves.

I would especially like to thank Dr. Essam Fahim and Dr. Fazilda Nabeel for being exceptional mentors throughout my undergraduate journey. They supported me with undergraduate advice, graduate school guidance, and important academic and professional decisions. They also helped me understand my options, shared funded programmes and opportunities with me, and consistently encouraged me throughout the process. Their mentorship has had a lasting impact on both my academic and personal growth, and I am deeply grateful for everything they have done for me."

Congratulations Iman! We wish you all the best.

Congratulations to Haider Ghani Jafari (BSc. Economics and Mathematics, Class of 2021) who has been selected for the prestigious Oxford-Weidenfeld and Hoffmann - Shuaib Chaudhary Scholarship and Leadership programme to pursue a Masters of Public Policy at the University of Oxford!

Haider is a public sector consultant at Acasus who has worked with various governments in Pakistan for the past five years to improve health outcomes for over a 100 million citizens.

Most recently, he worked with the Minister and Secretary Health of Balochistan to lead a roadmap to strengthen primary care services across 1,000+ health facilities across the province and has also supported the Minister of Health in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, receiving an honorary award from the Government of KP for his contributions in managing the crisis.

During his time at LUMS, Haider worked as an advisor at the State Bank of Pakistan, presented his research paper at the South Asian Economics Students’ Meet (SAESM) in Nepal, and won the prestigious Ernst Mach grant to study at the FH Joanneum University in Austria as an exchange student.

At Oxford, Haider aspires to strengthen health outcomes by instituting policies that allow every citizen to access healthcare as a right and not a privilege.

We are proud to share that Gender Studies in Pakistan: Views from the Field, published by Folio Books (Lahore, July 2026), features four contributors connected to MGSHSS.

The volume is edited by Dr. Nida Kirmani, Associate Professor of Sociology at MGSHSS, who also co-authors the introductory chapter, "Contextualising Gender Studies in Pakistan," which sets out the key debates in Pakistani feminist thought and the histories of women's movements that the rest of the volume builds on.

Three further contributors have MGSHSS connections. Dr. Maryam Ibrahim, Assistant Professor at MGSHSS, contributes a chapter on gender and urbanisation, drawing on her research on urban development, housing, and gender exclusion in Pakistani cities. Zainab Najeeb, a former Teaching Fellow at MGSHSS, writes on gender and development. MGSHSS alumna Mehlab Jameel, an anthropologist and activist, contributes a chapter on how a bill becomes a law, drawing on their direct involvement in drafting Pakistan's transgender rights legislation.

The book spans 22 chapters across six sections, covering feminist theory, activism, development, labour, law, religion, literature, and the media.

Please join us in congratulating Abdul Moeed and Amna Shahzad, BSc (Hons.) Economics, Batch of 2025, both of whom have been awarded the Commonwealth Scholarships to pursue their Masters in the UK!

Abdul Moeed will be pursuing a masters in Entrepreneurship & Innovation Management from the University of Surrey and Amna will be pursuing an MSc in Economics and Data Science from the University of Bristol.

A note from Abdul Moeed:

“My time at MGSHSS, taught me to look beyond numbers and see the people, institutions, and stories behind them. Through research, fieldwork and countless conversations, I learned that meaningful change begins with asking the right questions and this is what inspired me to pursue entrepreneurship and innovation, not as a shift away from economics, but as a way to translate ideas into lasting impact.

This journey would not have been possible without the mentors who believed in me long before I believed in myself. I am deeply grateful to Professor Nadia Mukhtar, whose guidance during my senior project on migration and income inequality strengthened my analytical and research skills, and to Dr. Farah Said, whose mentorship and support throughout my DRP and graduate school applications gave me the confidence to pursue opportunities beyond LUMS. I am equally thankful to Dr. Hadia Majid and Professor Ameem Lutfi for their encouragement, thoughtful guidance, and unwavering belief in my potential."

A note from Amna on this achievement:

“My time at LUMS has been instrumental in shaping my academic and professional journey. The rigorous Economics curriculum, research opportunities, and teaching experiences equipped me with the analytical skills, confidence, and resilience that made this achievement possible.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the LUMS Economics Department for fostering an environment of excellence and continuous learning. A special thank you to Prof. Nadia Mukhtar for her support during my RA-Ship with CDPR, Dr. Ayesha Ali, and Prof. Usman Elahi for their unwavering mentorship, encouragement, and support throughout my undergraduate journey.”

Congratulations Abdul Moeed and Amna! We wish you both the best ahead! 🎉

Congratulations to Zaid Irfan for producing the best SPROJ from the Anthropology and Sociology Stream at MGSHSS!

Zaid’s project, The Digital Adda: Cars, Comments and the ‘Captain’, focuses on the online taxi industry and ride-sharing platforms, adding to the existing conversations on informality and the economy by exploring what does and does not change in the experience of labor and sociality when gig work is mediated through digital platforms where the market of work is shaped by the calculations of an algorithm.

His extends his gratitude to Dr. Umair Javed for his support and direction, and all his professors at MGSHSS, without whom this project would not have been possible.

Great job, Zaid! We look forward to your journey ahead 🙌
