A Call for Urgent Healthcare Safety Reform
Deeply saddened and heartbroken by the tragic loss of newborn lives in the fire at PIMS Islamabad. Such an incident is not only a profound human tragedy, but also a serious reminder of the responsibility we carry to ensure the safety of our most vulnerable patients.
Beyond condolences, this moment demands accountability, immediate action, and meaningful reform. Every public healthcare facility must have robust fire-safety systems, regularly inspected electrical infrastructure, functional alarms and firefighting equipment, clearly defined evacuation routes, and trained emergency-response teams.
For neonatal and critical-care units in particular, hospitals should conduct mandatory emergency drills, continuous safety audits, backup power assessments, and independent inspections, with deficiencies addressed without delay.
The lives of patients—especially newborns—must never be compromised by preventable safety failures.
