An electric taxi driver operating under Punjab’s local e-taxi scheme faced severe financial shock after navigating waterlogged roads during recent monsoon downpours. The standing rainwater seeped into the vehicle's floor-mounted battery system, causing extensive water damage and electrical shorting that resulted in a repair estimate of PKR 35 Lakh (3.5 Million) for a complete battery pack replacement a figure that matches or exceeds the market value of the EV itself.

Because electric vehicles house heavy battery units beneath the cabin floor, they remain highly vulnerable to water ingress during heavy urban flooding, despite manufacturer IP ratings. This incident underscores critical challenges for EV adoption across South Asia, where poor urban drainage regularly leaves roads flooded and low-clearance EVs exposed.

Furthermore, standard EV warranties and basic insurance policies frequently exclude water ingress damage, leaving fleet owners and individual drivers fully liable for catastrophic repair costs.

World Bank کے پنجاب Clean Air Program کی دستاویز میں 900,000 نہیں بلکہ 900 heavy vehicles (یا equivalent) کو buyback/scrappage scheme کے تحت ختم کرنے کا ہدف درج ہے۔ یہ ہدف جون 2030 تک کا ہے۔

11 اگست 2026 کی رپورٹس کے مطابق، 900 پرانی/دھواں چھوڑنے والی بسوں اور ٹرکوں کو ختم کرنے کا ہدف World Bank کی $40 million financing سے منسلک ہے۔

البتہ یہ کہنا کہ “حکومت صرف 40 ملین ڈالر لینے کے لیے لوگوں کی گاڑیاں ختم کر رہی ہے” مکمل طور پر ثابت شدہ بات نہیں ہے۔ اصل پروگرام کا مقصد فضائی آلودگی کم کرنا ہے، جبکہ World Bank کی رقم نتائج حاصل کرنے سے منسلک financing ہے۔ World Bank نے پنجاب Clean Air Program کے لیے مجموعی طور پر $300 million کا پروگرام منظور کیا تھا۔

“سوال یہ ہے کہ حکومت پرانی اور آلودگی پھیلانے والی گاڑیوں کو اسکریپ کرنے کے ساتھ مالکان کو مناسب متبادل اور معاوضہ کیسے دے گی؟ صرف ہدف پورا کرنا کافی نہیں، عام آدمی کی گاڑی اور روزگار بھی محفوظ رہنا چاہیے۔
