CAUSES OF CAR OVERHEATING

Car overheating is usually caused by issues in the cooling system, such as low coolant levels from leaks, a faulty thermostat or water pump, a clogged or broken radiator, a broken radiator fan, or a blown head gasket, all preventing heat from escaping the engine effectively. Low engine oil and a bad radiator cap can also contribute.

COMMON CAUSES:
🔥 Low Coolant: The most frequent cause, often due to leaks in hoses, radiator, water pump, or head gasket, or simply neglect.
🔥 Faulty Thermostat: If stuck closed, it blocks coolant from reaching the radiator to cool down.
🔥 Broken Water Pump: The pump circulates coolant; if it fails, coolant doesn't move.
🔥 Damaged Radiator: Leaks, clogs (debris/corrosion), or a blocked surface prevent heat dissipation.
🔥 Bad Radiator Fan: Electric fans failing to turn on, especially at low speeds, reduces airflow over the radiator.
🔥 Clutch fan is not working properly due to low level of silicon oil.
🔥 Cooling System Leaks: Holes in hoses, radiator, head gasket, or seals allow coolant to escape.
🔥 Blown Head Gasket: Allows hot combustion gases to enter the coolant system, causing rapid overheating.
🔥 Clogged Coolant Passages: Buildup of mineral deposits inside the engine or radiator restricts flow.
🔥 Low Engine Oil: Oil helps cool the engine; low levels increase friction and heat.
🔥 Faulty Radiator Cap: Fails to hold pressure, lowering the coolant boiling point.

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR CAR OVERHEATS:
👍 Stop Safely: Pull over and turn off the engine.
👍 Let it Cool: Allow significant time for the engine to cool down.
👍 Check Coolant (Carefully): Once cool, check coolant level; add the correct 50/50 mix if low.
👍 Inspect for Leaks: Look for puddles or visible leaks under the car.
👍 Get Professional Help: A mechanic can diagnose and fix the specific problem, as overheating can cause severe damage.

LESSON of the Day

OVERHEATING:

An overheating car sign is usually a red temperature warning light (thermometer symbol) or the gauge needle hitting the red zone, accompanied by steam from under the hood, a sweet smell (leaking coolant), poor performance, or strange engine noises, signaling you must pull over safely and turn off the engine to prevent severe damage.

I: DASHBOARD SIGNS (The Main Indicators)
🔥 Temperature Light: A red thermometer icon illuminates, sometimes with a "TEMP" message or flashing red/blue.
🔥 Temperature Gauge: The needle moves past the middle to the "H" (Hot) or into the red section.

II: PHYSICAL SIGNS (What You See & Smell)
🔥Steam: White steam (not smoke) rising from under the hood, indicating boiling coolant.
🔥Sweet Smell: A syrupy, sweet odor from the engine bay, meaning coolant is leaking and burning off.
🔥Coolant Leaks: Puddles of brightly colored fluid (green, pink, orange) under the car.

III: PERFORMANCE SIGNS (How it Feels)
🔥 Poor Performance: The car struggles to accelerate or loses power.
🔥 Strange Noises: Clicking, knocking, or clanking sounds from the engine.

IV: WHAT TO DO
🔥 Pull Over Safely: Find a safe spot as soon as possible.
🔥 Turn Off Engine: Shut it down immediately.
🔥 Don't Open Hood (Yet): Wait 30-40 minutes for it to cool down to avoid burns from pressurized steam.
🔥 Add distilled water/coolant to the radiator once the temperature goes back to normal.
🔥 Call for Help: Get it to a mechanic to help you find the cause of overheating.
