"The Netherlands has 5 million e-bikes — one for every three people — and they have replaced more car journeys than all the country's electric cars ever will.

The conversation about electric transport focuses relentlessly on cars. Which model. Which range. Which charging speed. Which manufacturer will survive the transition. The discussion is important and the attention is proportionate to the commercial stakes involved.

It is also incomplete.

Five million e-bikes. In a country of 17 million people. One for every three residents. Used for commuting, shopping, school runs, and leisure at distances that make cars wasteful and cycling impractical without electric assist. Each one consuming roughly 100 times less energy per kilometre than an electric car. Each one requiring a cycle path and a wall socket rather than a charging network and a home with a garage.

The Dutch did not achieve this through an e-bike mandate or a subsidy specific to electric bicycles. They achieved it by building cycling infrastructure good enough that cycling became the rational transport choice for an enormous range of journeys — and then letting electric assist extend that choice to people for whom unaided cycling was impractical.

The e-bike is not a solution for every journey. It is a solution for the short to medium journeys that dominate urban travel — and it solves them at a fraction of the infrastructure cost, the energy cost, and the space cost of any vehicle that weighs two tonnes.

Five million Dutch people figured this out independently. The infrastructure made the decision obvious.
