First introduced in 1989, the Mazda MX-5 Miata was Mazda’s answer to a type of sports car that was slowly disappearing — the lightweight, simple, affordable two-seat roadster.
Inspired by classic British roadsters but engineered with Japanese reliability, Mazda created something that would eventually become one of the most iconic sports cars ever made.
The philosophy was simple:
Jinba-ittai — “horse and rider as one.”
And you can feel that philosophy in the way the Miata is built.
A front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout.
A lightweight body.
Near 50:50 weight distribution.
Low seating position.
Short wheelbase.
And a chassis designed to communicate with the driver rather than isolate them from the road.
Instead of chasing huge horsepower numbers, Mazda focused on keeping the car light and responsive.
That philosophy has remained at the heart of every generation.
The original NA Miata became instantly recognizable with its signature pop-up headlights, simple interior, five-speed manual transmission, and eager four-cylinder engine. It wasn’t about overwhelming performance — it was about making every corner, every shift, and every open stretch of road feel special.
Later generations continued to evolve the formula while staying true to the original concept.
