MG, or Morris Garages, is a British car brand that was founded in 1924 by Cecil Kimber. The brand has had a number of owners over the years, including BMW, Phoenix Venture Holdings, and SAIC Motor.

▫️Founding
Cecil Kimber founded MG in Oxford, UK in 1924.
The brand's name, MG, is short for Morris Garages, a tribute to Kimber's boss, William Morris.

▫️MG's first car was the MG 14/28, a sporty version of the Morris Oxford.
Ownership changes
MG merged with Austin to form the British Motor Corporation (BMC).
BMC later became British Leyland.
BMW acquired Rover Group, which included MG, but sold it in 2000.

▫️Phoenix Venture Holdings purchased MG and Rover, forming MG Rover Group.
MG Rover Group went into administration in 2005.
SAIC Motor, a Chinese state-owned automaker, has controlled MG since 2007.

▫️Current status
MG is a British-origin brand, but most manufacturing now occurs in China.
The design and engineering of MG cars retain a strong British influence.
