15 Car Faults That Make You Spend More on Gasoline
Fuel economy doesn't depend only on your driving habits. Many mechanical and electronic faults can force your engine to burn more fuel than necessary, often without obvious warning signs. If your vehicle suddenly requires more trips to the fuel station, one or more of these common problems could be responsible.
A dirty or faulty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor sends incorrect airflow information to the ECU, causing an improper air-fuel mixture. Likewise, a worn oxygen (O₂) sensor may fail to detect exhaust oxygen accurately, leading the engine to run richer than necessary and consume extra fuel.
A faulty Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor can make the ECU believe the engine is still cold, even after warming up. As a result, it injects additional fuel. A thermostat stuck open has a similar effect because the engine never reaches its ideal operating temperature, reducing efficiency.
The ignition system also plays a major role. Worn spark plugs and weak ignition coils create incomplete combustion and engine misfires, wasting fuel while reducing power. Dirty or leaking fuel injectors can disrupt fuel atomization, preventing efficient combustion.
Fuel delivery problems, such as incorrect fuel pressure, can cause the engine to receive either too much or too little fuel. Meanwhile, vacuum leaks allow unmetered air into the intake system, confusing the ECU and affecting fuel control.
A dirty throttle body restricts smooth airflow and can cause unstable idle and sluggish acceleration. A clogged air filter limits the amount of clean air entering the engine, forcing it to work harder and consume more fuel.
The exhaust system is equally important. A blocked catalytic converter restricts exhaust flow, increasing engine backpressure and reducing performance. The engine compensates by burning more fuel to maintain power.
Not every cause is under the hood. A slipping automatic transmission wastes engine power because RPM increases without efficiently transferring power to the wheels. Dragging brake calipers create constant rolling resistance, forcing the engine to work harder even when cruising. Finally, underinflated tires or poor wheel alignment increase rolling resistance, requiring more fuel to move the vehicle.
Regular maintenance, timely diagnostics, and replacing worn components before they fail completely can significantly improve fuel economy, restore engine performance, and reduce long-term repair costs. If you notice reduced mileage, don't assume it's normal. A professional inspection can identify the root cause early, saving both fuel and money while keeping your vehicle running at its best.
