🚗 NZ driver licence changes are coming — here’s what actually matters

There’s a lot of confusion out there right now, especially around tests, timelines, and demerits.

👉 This breakdown is based on current NZTA information (April 2026) — simple and accurate.

Key things to know:

-Nothing changes until 25 Jan 2027 (current rules still apply)
-The full licence test is being removed
-The restricted test becomes the main test
-Learner (under 25) → 12 months (can still reduce to 6)
-Demerits from May 2026 can delay your full licence

NZ driver licensing changes – what stands out so far:
The Government has confirmed changes to the driver licensing system, with everyone moving to the new system from January 2027. While some detail is still to come, a few key points are already clear:
• Eyesight testing will only be done at the learner stage, not at every licence stage like it is now
• Driving courses are being overhauled – It appears the current defensive driving course model will be dropped and replaced with a new system. NZTA will have much stronger oversight of course providers, including fit and proper checks, the ability to impose conditions, and the power to suspend or revoke approval.
• “Supervised driving hours” are referenced, but it’s not yet clear exactly how these will be recorded or whether they must be with a professional instructor, a supervisor, or a mix of both
There are still some unknowns, especially around courses and supervised hours, and NZTA has said more information will be provided closer to the time.
