Just bought an EV? Read this first. 👇
Congratulations — you're saving on fuel, reducing emissions, and driving one of the most advanced vehicles on the road. But EVs come with a new set of habits and a new kind of specialist care.
Here's what every new EV owner in Wellington should know:
🔋 Your battery is everything
A general guideline is to not run the battery down to 0% or keep it constantly charged at 100% — both approaches can degrade the battery over time. Aim to stay between 20–80% for daily use.
❄️ Temperature affects range
Extreme temperatures can negatively impact battery performance and reduce your vehicle's range. If you can, park your EV in the shade during hot days and avoid prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures.
🔧 "Low maintenance" doesn't mean "no maintenance"
While EVs use regenerative braking which reduces wear on brake pads, brake systems still require periodic inspection. Brake fluid can degrade over time, and parts like callipers and discs must be checked for safety and performance.
💻 Software updates matter
Regular software updates can improve battery management, charging efficiency, and overall vehicle performance. Stay on top of them.
⚠️ Get the right specialist
If you encounter issues with your EV's ability to charge — including insufficient power flow or loose connections — get it seen by a qualified mechanic experienced with EVs and your specific model.
That's exactly what we are. Wellington's auto electrical specialists, trained and equipped for the EV era.
