MARINA REPORT For Weekend Friday 29nd May 2026. The cold spell continued this past week. Cold nights as low as 2 - 5 degrees including a couple of frosts and morning fog. The Marina and carpark have again been quiet, as has the road traffic . The weekend weather is chance of rain Sunday and Monday -Tuesday heavy rain and Northerlies.

Picture 1. Historic Jetty at the entrance to Marina, now closed to Public. ( sorry but I can’t help but point out the Donald Trump sign off ) “thank you for co-operating “ - in this matter -

Picture 2.The Harbourmasters office has an asset condition report which identifies the historic jetty is no longer safe for public use. As a result, the jetty is closed to the public. The public will be notified what options are available in the future.

Picture 3. It is great to see amongst all the promises, reasons and long term solutions suggested by the DIA. We sometimes forget that the reason the Marina gardens and grounds are immaculate and tidy are due to a very conscientious local guy who has pride in his work and the customer comes first. The other day I stopped at the Marina just on dusk and said to Tony – why don’t you knock off for day? “Nah mate, I want the whole area finished for the people to enjoy over the long weekend “ made me think.

Picture 4. Field Staff removing parts of the ill-fated floating jetty. The Harbourmasters reported that, the damaged floating pontoon at the Boat Ramp remains an active issue and they are currently working through options to find a long term solution to ensure it is safe. fit for purpose and resilient. ( third time luck )

Picture 5 There was a boat fire in Taupo Harbour a few years ago, the owner had returned off the Lake and had just refuelled at his berth. (They don’t have the luxury of a dedicated refuelling berth) The resulting fire was well involved within four minutes said Fire and Emergency. The quick arrival of firefighters saved the boat next to it which was also well alight and in few more minutes it would have also been lost. That was 7 minutes. Turangi Fire station is a voluntary organization ,while its response time is excellent its drivetime to Motuoapa is 10 minutes. The question is how many boats on a” herringbone” Pier would be in an out of control fire in 15 minutes? Our fuelling berth was built away from the other vessels and on a road frontage for quick fire access. Only one boat would be lost and people have an escape route. Petrol vapour is an invisible wick. More than a quarter of boat fires start because of close proximity to another boat that goes up in flames … Please be careful when refuel your vessel.

Picture 6.. The Beer O metre shows, the Lake Level is presently 356.80 metres above chart Datum. The level will continue to fall through the weekend. The outflow at present is 250 cubic metres per sec and will continue to rise through the weekend .The picture above the Beer Meter is “Wishing you a great Kings Birthday Weekend."'

‘Weather for. ..Friday fine light winds cloudy… Saturday chance of showers light winds 10 knots.. Sunday cloudy.. chance showers. .Northerlies 15 knots develop …. Monday ..heavy falls of rain in afternoon Northerlies 15 knots .

Good Luck , for the weekend -- keep warm and dry …. CHEERS

MARINA REPORT For Weekend Friday 22nd May 2026. The past week was similar to the week before. Cold nights as low as 4 - 5 degrees including a couple of frosts and morning fog. The days were warm with some cloud, but mostly light winds with a cold bite to them. The Marina and carpark have again been quiet, as has the road traffic . The weekend weather is a copy of last week except, maybe more cloud during the day.

Picture 1. Oil or oily water. Maritime NZ have published a reminder not to spray anything on an Oil spill. The use of dispersants to spray on an oil spill is illegal and requires appropriate authorisation. Helpful ways to ensure oily water doesn’t make it overboard. Place a drip tray under the motor – Sorbent pads on the bilge floor to ensure surface oil is soaked up, to be dumped onshore. Install a float switch where it can automatically stop discharge before oil is removed,

Picture 2. Don’t swim in or stand in the water to work on the boat at a Marina. The danger in the Marina is not the water itself, it is alternating current that has leaked into the water. Quite often travelling between boats or to ground. It is a critical safety and maintenance issue across NZ. It creates Electric Shock Drowning. ( ESD ) can paralyse or shock swimmers, It only takes current in the water that amounts to half a lightbulb to cause fatality and as little as 6V to cause paralysis, making the water immediately fatal. The Standards and Compliance Marina operators in NZ to supply shore power are the “Electrical Warrant of Fitness “ ( eWof) and a annual “ Testing and Tagging” of shore leads.

Picture 3. “ PLB” short for “ Personal Locator Beacon” It is one of those pieces of equipment that fits this saying---. “ it is better to have it and not need it, that need it and not have it “ these are designed to be carried on your person .. making them ideal if you need instant action if the boat is in danger or if you fall overboard. When you set the beacon off it is the most effective way of letting people know that you need urgent help and where to find you. How do they work ?When activated they transmit a distress signal directly via the International Cospas-- Sarsat satellite system straight to” Rescue Coordination Centre NZ in Wellington. When purchasing ensure you chose the waterproof floating model. Once you have purchased a PLB you must register it with the Rescue Coordination Centre and on the “Beacons Website” before use and keep your details up to date .. Complete instructions come with the purchase.

Picture 4. The Beer O metre shows, the Lake Level is presently 356.89 metres above chart Datum. The level will continue to fall through the weekend. The outflow at present is 180 cubic metres per sec and will continue to fall through the weekend .

The picture above the Beer o Meter is ‘’” If you can’t call for HELP -- No One can rescue you ..”” worth a thought ?

Weather for. ..Friday variable 5 knots fine fog. Saturday southerlies 5 knots fine.. Sunday southerlies 5 knots fine….Monday variable 5 knots fine.

Good Luck , for the weekend -- keep warm …. CHEERS
