“She’ll be right.”
Famous last words.

Most towing setups feel fine…
until you hit the right speed, the wrong bump, or have to brake a bit harder than expected.

That’s when it shows up.

If you don’t want to find out the hard way, run through this before you head off:

👉 Is it actually sitting level?
(not nose high, not nose down, level behind the vehicle)

👉 Where’s the heavy stuff?
(if it’s behind the axle, you’re asking for sway)

👉 Too much weight jammed up front?
(that might feel better… until it loads up your vehicle and everything works harder)

👉 Could anything move while you’re driving?
(if it can shift, it will and that changes everything)

👉 Same setup as last time?
(different vehicle, different load = different towing)

Takes a minute to check.
Way longer to deal with it once it goes wrong.

🔥Pro tip: if something feels off while you’re towing, don’t ignore it.
That’s your warning sign, not something to push through.

Worth saving — this is usually how problems start.

You can load a trailer “by the book”
and it can still feel off when you’re towing.
That’s because it’s not just about how it’s loaded,
it’s how the whole setup works together.

A few things we see all the time:

👉 Weight looks centred… but it’s actually sitting just behind the axle

👉 Load is balanced side to side… but too much of it is up high

👉 Trailer is loaded well… but it’s not sitting level behind the vehicle

That last one catches people out.

If the tow height isn’t right and the trailer sits nose high or low,
it changes how the weight is distributed, even if you’ve loaded it properly.

So it can feel like a loading issue… when it’s actually a setup issue.

And then there’s this one:

👉 Adding more weight forward to try balance the wrong tow height can make a trailer feel more stable
That’s true, but only to a point.

Too much nose weight:
• overloads the rear of the tow vehicle
• affects steering and braking
• puts extra stress through the drawbar and coupling

You’re aiming for balance across the whole setup, not just loading the front

🔥Pro tip: if something feels off when towing, check both,
your load placement and how the trailer is sitting behind the vehicle.

Small adjustments in either can completely change how it tows.

Once you’ve felt the difference, you’ll know what to look for next time.

Good one to save for when something doesn’t feel quite right.

Following on from our last post on nose weight —
this is where it really comes into play.

It’s not just about how much weight you’ve got in the trailer…
it’s where that weight sits.

👉 Too much weight at the back:
• reduces nose weight
• increases sway
• trailer can feel light and unsettled

👉 Too much weight too far forward:
• increases nose weight
• adds stress through the drawbar and coupling
• loads up the rear of the vehicle

The goal is to keep things balanced.

👉 Heavier items:
• over the axle
• or slightly forward of it

👉 Keep the load:
• low
• centred
• evenly distributed side to side

Small changes in position can make a bigger difference than people expect.

🔥Pro tip: Start with heavy items just forward of the axle, then adjust from there, small changes can make a big difference.

Next post we’ll show a simple way to set up your load so it tows properly.

Good one to save for next time you’re loading up.

One of the biggest factors in how a trailer tows is nose weight
(the weight pushing down on the tow ball).

Get this wrong, and things can go sideways pretty quickly.

👉 Too little nose weight:
• trailer becomes unstable
• higher chance of sway, especially at speed
• Doesn't track nicely behind vehicle

👉 Too much nose weight:
• overloads the rear of the vehicle
• affects steering and braking
• puts extra stress through the drawbar and coupling

As a general guide, you’re usually aiming for around 5–10% of your total loaded trailer weight,
but it also needs to stay within the limits of your vehicle, towbar, tow ball and coupling (whichever is the lowest).

Where it catches people out is how the trailer is loaded.
Even small shifts in weight can change this more than you’d think.

🔥 Pro tip: you can check this without a special tool,
support the coupling on a set of scales (using a block to match tow height) and you’ll get a good idea of your nose weight.

Next one we’ll get into how to load a trailer properly, that’s where it all ties together.

👉 Good one to save if you tow regularly.

One thing we always look at first is how the trailer is sitting behind the vehicle.

Ideally, you want it level, or very slightly nose down.

If it’s not, the load through the trailer starts to shift.

👉 Nose too high:
• less weight on the tow ball
• more chance of sway
• not as stable under braking
• Additional stress on the coupling

👉 Nose too low:
• more load pushed into the drawbar
• extra stress through the coupling
• everything working harder than it needs to

The tricky part is…
it can still feel fine when you’re driving.

But over time, that setup starts to show.

The key is making sure your trailer is set up to suit your tow vehicle’s tow ball height,
and checking that it still sits level, especially if you’re using different vehicles.

🔥 Pro tip: check your coupling height when the vehicle is loaded how you’d normally use it.
Extra weight in the tray or back of the vehicle can change how it sits.

Next one we’ll get into nose weight, that’s where it really starts to count.

Good one to save if you’re setting up a trailer.
