Another busy month in the workshop.

Two repeat customers in, this RHD 66 Mustang convertible for fuel system and carburettor repairs, in the past its had a electric pump fitted down by the gas tank as well as the original mechanical pump, both going at once made the fuel pressure unstable so a regulator was mounted to balance up the pressure. Owner wished to keep the electric pump as fires up easier after sitting for months on end, also went through the carburettor, new needle valves, gaskets, etc.

Then this 1971 XY Falcon ute in for service and fuel system repairs. Modern fuels seem to kill the fuel system when sitting for long periods. I fitted the carburettor new 11 years ago and its never been serviced so that’s a good run, fully dismantled and gone thought with new gaskets, needle valves, took considerable cleaning as the throttle ventures were discoloured and dirty. While at in replace the fuel pump and also fitted a fuel pressure regulator, runs great now.

In between vehicle servicing and other repairs ive been sorting this IDA Weber carburettor set for a Historic/Vintage mustang race car. The carburettors are custom modified 51mm IDA’s with enlarged fuel bowls and oversize needle valves, even though a linkage kit was supplied it wasn’t accurate enough to operate all four carburettors and allow of individual adjustability, so I had reengineer all the throttle rods using spherical rod ends, centre pivot turn buckle, etc. Quite a time consuming job but great satisfaction when sorted as the pull on the carburettors from idle to full throttle is now very smooth, this helps with accelerator pedal feel. I also made the custom fuel lines for each carburettor as well at the water outlet manifold. The aluminium intake manifold was ported by Marsh Motorsport as they are building the engine, I had to tidy up the outside edges for linkage clearance then had it HPC coated in silver, one very nice set up.

Parts sales have been average, this month sales was this used 71/3 Mustang 8inch diff strapped to a pallet and sent to Auckland, Camaro chin spoiler to Invercargill, Stainless Ford Hot-rod 289/302 Headers to Taupo and stainless Tri-Y headers to Auckland, couple of used Ford 8"/9" axles and a very rare Ford FE radiator header tank to Paraparaumu plus a few others, all keeps ticking over.

Enjoy the pics and take care out there. Dale at Coastline Autos, Tauranga, New Zealand.

Still plenty on the go in the workshop.

Customers 70 Mach 1 Mustang in for a new factory look aluminum radiator, new hoses and fresh coolant, the fuel tank sender I fitted 6 months back died so refitted a new upgrade version, some of this reproduction electrical part stuff ages out pretty quickly!

Finally have this full Ford 9inch diff build done for a customer 71 ZH Fairlane, quite a bit involved in this, used an original Ford 9inch stepped tube diff housing so the original diff U-bolts can be used, rebuilt Ford 9inch diff head, 3.25 gears, 31 spline L*D with new bearings and clutch plates, new 31 spline axles and rear disc brake conversion, all assembled, painted and ready to fit.

What will be my last major build is this 65 Mustang historic race car been built to race in the “Historic Muscle and Saloon Car” group here in NZ, this is full on every single nut and bolt fabrication and build, this is one of those jobs were you just chip away at it between other work not seeming to making much progress but you do, in the end it all adds up and you slowly get there. Will post info from time to time as it progresses but often not much to see until its painted, and at the final assembly stage which is still sometime away. Currently with craftsman Panelbeater Scott Tercel, Warkworth for the next stage.

Between jobs and weekends, I final pulled the engine out of the 69 Boss race car, been a good 5 months since I last raced it and damaged the engine, now at Fish Family Racing, Ramarama, NZ for a full freshen up, plenty else to do on the Mustang to tidy it up after some 20 years of racing, so a light restoration at the same time, hope to make next season, fingers crossed.

Enjoy the pics, Regards Dale and the Coastline Automotive, Tauranga, New Zealand Team.

Today I called by to see Paul Fahey, hes at the Bethlehem Shores Rest Home in Tauranga and he’s doing great.

I gave him the birthday list of well-wishers from last months posting, his 93rd birthday, he was quite amazed and very appreciative of it all, and says thanks to all those that sent messages.

Paul still has great memories of his time in motor racing and all the fantastic people he’s met, he can’t believe that all these years later many still remember him.

Enjoy the pictures, Regards Dale.

This weekend(21st/22nd March 26) I should be racing at Hampton Downs with the Historic Muscle and Saloon Car group, but a broken engine from last Dec has me laid up, and haven’t had the time to pull the engine, will be this winter’s job now. For all those racers in the group, enjoy the weekend’s racing as im sure wishing I was there.

Workshop has still been busy though February and March, this beautiful 69 Mach 1 Mustang for full front and rear suspension replacement and upgrades along with new front brakes, and then this super nice 68 Mustang coupe in for a power disc brake upgrade conversion changing it from non-power drum brakes, plus suspension upgrades too. I’ve been doing this type of work for 35 plus years and its never simply “just throwing new parts at it” as often other components are worn out and need replacement, must remember these cars are 60 plus years old now.

I always work in with customers doing their own work(I can’t do it all) and last week I helped supply a new fuel tank and sender for this 65 Shelby Replica Mustang, a mustang that’s been in New Zealand for over 40 years with neat history. I told him a good optional upgrading is to a larger 20 gallon(US) fuel tank but the fuel filler neck requires modification, he done that and now has extra fuel to burn(ha ha). I’ve also supplied many other parts for this mustang as well as advice(needed or not).

As well as the above I still have plenty of bench work on the go, several Ford 8” and 9” diff head builds plus a complete Ford 9inch diff for a Australian 71 ZD Fairlane which includs rear disc brakes, but more on these later.

Enjoy the pics and your day, Dale at Coastline Auto, Tauranga, New Zealand

Happy Birthday Paul Fahey.

Today is a great milestone for our 6 X New Zealand Saloon Car Champion/Legend whom turns 93 today.

Myself and Wayne Hills paid Paul a visit yesterday(see pics) and he’s looking great, he’s more upbeat than he’s been in a while, especially after suffering a broken hip in a fall late last year.

If you wish to send him a birthday card, address it to “Mr Paul Fahey, Bethlehem Shores, Care Suite 517, Pukeko Wing, 141 Bethlehem Road, Tauranga, 3110”

Also attached are some pictures of Paul from the past and some of the great Saloon Cars he raced, including these three framed pics from Joe and Robyn Wright, Enjoy.

You’re welcome to share this posting, and all messages will be printed off and taken for Paul to read, I know he will enjoy it.

New Year started with a hiss and roar and now here we were in Feb, crazy.

One of the more technical/experience jobs is sorting these 4 X 48IDA Weber’s on the original Red Dawson 67 Trans Am Mustang, a race car with long well-known NZ racing history. Had to sort the idle and part progression circuit which operates from idle to just under 3000RPM, this helps with “drive” of the corners when the engine is slightly down on RPM and under the camshaft. Some think its black magic voodoo stuff but in reality quite simple, its more about having a range of air bleeds and fuel jets to try. Anyway, all sorted and Mustang back with its owners.

While on carburetors this repeat customers 69 Dodge 383 Superbee in for fuel pump replacement and carburetor rebuild, these old AFB Carters are such a great carburetor, this one was over fueling so replaced the needle valves and reset float heights, careful assembly is required as they have small metering pins and several side linkages that must be refitted correctly, all back on the car and running great, even the original cold start choke works now.

And this Ford 9inch diff head that I’d previously built, but customer decided for a gear ratio change and go to the strong billet 1350 long style pinion yoke. No bearings needed, just change the ring and pinion and reset everything up again, still required a full wash and clean while apart, good to go now.

Currently have several other Ford 9” diff rebuilds and parts sales on the go, and also collecting parts for a 347 Mustang engine build, more details on these later.

Enjoy, Dale at Coastline Automotive, Tauranga, New Zealand

Well, another year almost done and dusted, been a busy one but not so sure about the finances? Parts sales have been average and on top of that the strong USA currency has made importing a lot more expensive, the double edge sword I have to deal with.

Workshops always busy and infact never stops. I managed to get a couple of jobs finished pre-X-mas, this genuine 1970 Perana Capri V8 was in for a full front suspension and brake rebuild along with other repairs, its taken a couple of months to source the correct parts(thanks Fitzy and Wayne).

Several repeat customers in, this lovely little 66 mustang coupe for a service, tune and check over, this mustang ive done previous work on and it drives beautifully.

This 69 BB 427 Camaro also in for its annual check over and service, another car ive done a bunch of work on, has a 427 engine with twin fours and a TKO 5 Speed..

This 70 Mach1 with a 351 Cleveland engine broke the front damper pulley this week, owner was lucky it didn’t go through the radiator, I had a stock replacement damper so out with the radiator, belts, pulleys to replace, hes good to go for X-Mas now.

Another Ford 9inch diff head gear ratio change for a race car, can do these with my eyes close(well, maybe). This 67 Mustang Coupe in with rear diff problems, replacement diff housing fitted, new axles, bearings, brakes, work is still ongoing.

And just today Nick and Alana picked up there 65 Falcon 2 Door Hardtop Project, i can see a great restoration in the future. Thank you for a gift voucher and card.

A month back I picked up all my USA freight which included this 68 Mustang J-Code Coupe, auto, p/s, original sun burnt paint, super mint rust-free CA body, has dents, 289 engine, doesn’t run, needs VIN & rego, an easier restoration project for $25K, contact me direct if interested.

That’s its from Dale at Coastline Auto, New Zealand. Merry X-Mas and Happy New Year, be careful out there and safe travels. PS: im around all stat days but call or txt first.

After a very successful MG Classic race meeting(39th year) at the circuit Chris Amon, Manfeild(NZ) a few weeks back I now have the 69 Boss Mustang loaded for this Sundays(7th Dec) “One Day” TACCOC Historic/Classic race meeting at Hampton Downs(New Zealand).

I luv these one day classic events as it doesn’t consume your whole weekend and yet you have same amount of races. Its qualifying and three rapid-fire races so very little time for standing around. At the end of the day there is a group BBQ to chat about what went rite(or wrong) and then a small drive home plus the weather is looking great(and hot).

This is my last event for this season/year so if you’re out and about come along and say hi.

I also still have plenty on the go in the workshop but more on that next posting.

Here are few pics from the recent MG Classic(thanks to the photographers) and loading the boss in the workshop today.

Enjoy. Dale at Coastline Automotive, Tauranga, New Zealand.

Hi All, about 4 weeks ago Paul Fahey had a bad fall(broke his hip and the head of his femur). The hip he broke was one that he had surgery on in 1956 after a motorcycle racing accident in Europe, and it had steel bar put in it back then.

After a recent 7.5 hour surgery they replaced the steel rod with a newer model, and has been in Tauranga Hospital ortho ward ever since. There is talk of moving him downstairs here at Tauranga hospital to the rehab ward next week, for 4 weeks.

Pauls daughter Karen is out from Canada to take care of him, so it is quite serious plus remember, he is 92 years old. For further contact Karens details are [email protected] or +1-604-803-8673.

When I hear more I’ll keep you updated but lets keep him in our thoughts(and please share) . Regards Dale

Still plenty happening in the workshop, this 65 Mustang coupe historic/classic race car build is pretty much full on, only getting held up when the outwork is slow, but that allows me to get other customer cars done, still, all in all I’m making good progress but a massive job.

In between these jobs I thought I better get some prep work done on my own 69 Boss Mustang race car as next weekend(14-16th Nov 25) I have the annual MG Classic race meeting at the Chris Amon Circuit, Manfeild(New Zealand). The gearbox was leaking oil so this came out to replaced a faulty gasket, plus new front brake calipers, rotors and pads. Replaced both inner tie-rod ends and a wheel alignment done today, bit of a polish and clean and its good to go.

This will be my 20th year racing the Mustang at the MG Classic, not a record as others have done more, but a milestone for me as im getting down to calling it and easing back a touch on my racing(time will tell) I still really enjoy pedaling the car and lots of great people involved so we’ll see what happens. Anyway, if you at the MG classic next weekend, im in the big building out back with the Historic Muscle and Saloon Car group so you’re welcome to call by and chat.

Enjoy the pics. Dale at coastline Automotive, Tauranga, New Zealand.
