With the winter months upon us and temperatures dropping across the country, Police are urging the public to be cautious when purchasing items such as firewood off Facebook Marketplace.
Police have been made aware of a Marketplace scam where buyers are paying for trailer loads of firewood which never get delivered.
We are encouraging the public to ensure they are aware of how to best protect themselves and loved ones from these scams.
Some ways to keep yourselves safe from online scams are:
🪓 Check the profile of the person selling to see when the profile was created. If it is very recent, there is a higher risk that the account has been created for a fake item or illegitimate purposes.
🪵 Ensure the sellers profile name matches their bank account name.
🪓 Never trust a screenshot that tells you something has been paid. You are best to check your own bank account to ensure a payment has gone through.
🪵 If you are meeting with someone in person to make a purchase, ensure you can do this in a public place with CCTV coverage.
🪓 If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is.
If you or somebody you know have been the victim of a scam, please report it to Police via 105.
