Facebook has just reminded us that 4 years ago we got the keys to the Drive EV Service Workshop!
Before that, our workshop arrangements were... questionable. 😂
We were fixing cars in the showroom or borrowing space from friends — mainly an outdoor hoist next to a car detailing wash bay. Not exactly the dream environment for pulling apart high-voltage EVs.
So we needed a new plan:
“Let’s get a small workshop, move our own work into it, and see if we can get enough other EV work to keep the lights on.”
Four years later, the lights are still on!
It’s certainly no get-rich-quick scheme. Building a workshop around cars designed to need less servicing, less maintenance and generally break down less often has some flaws as a business model. 😂
But somehow we’ve now looked after around 700 customers and had roughly 1,200 cars through the workshop.
That might sound small compared with a conventional workshop smashing through service jobs all day — but Drive EV has never really been a conventional workshop.
Much of our work is the specialist stuff most workshops simply don’t do — high-voltage battery faults, isolation faults, motor and drive unit rebuilds, and other tricky EV repairs.
Often the conventional answer is to replace a $20,000, $30,000 or even $40,000+ assembly because one part has failed. Our job is to figure out what actually failed and whether we can repair it — and we usually can!
There have been plenty of strange faults, big repairs, late nights and “well, we’ve never seen THAT before” moments along the way — but honestly, that’s what keeps the job interesting!
It hasn’t made us rich, but it has kept the doors open, taught us an enormous amount, and built something we’re bloody proud of.
