AMM tip 22: Misfuelling

Pumping the wrong fuel into your vehicle can be really dangerous for your engine and really expensive.
Diesel in a petrol car probably wont hurt so much but putting petrol into a diesel engine is the big problem. Diesel is fuel and a lubricant as well and petrol is fuel but not oily. So the petrol will be cleaning moving parts where the diesel would be lubricating, that will cause excessive friction between parts damaging the engine.
If you do make that mistake don't start the engine, contact me and I will come help you.
Thank you

AMM tip 21: Preventive maintenance

Taking care of your car regularly will save you from the stress of a sudden breakdown, which can be both dangerous and expensive.
So getting your car fully inspected twice a year at least is very important. Ask for a general inspection every time you get a service done.
Cars are designed to warn you everytime there is a problem. Listen for different noises, vibrations, power and fuel consumption...
For example:
Screeching metal noise while driving: probably just the brake pads but if you ignore, it will damage the discs, caliper and other components...
High pitch noise when starting in the morning: probably alternator belt but if you ignore, the belt can break after a while and your car will turn off while driving due to the battery not charging...
Not changing fluids regularly will ruin the engine, gearbox, brakes, cooling system...
So a job that usually costs around $130 can easily become $700 or more, involving tow trucks, parts... and all the stress.

Amm tip 20 : Automatic Transmission Service

Everything inside the A/T works under oil pressure. So it is very very important to make sure that the transmission is being service regularly, in average every 60 000 kms.
One way to check if it is due for a service is by checking the fluid colour. Usually it is clear red. Most cars have a dipstick for the A/T just like the one to check the engine oil level, other cars you might need to get underneath to check it.
Dirty fluid will cause malfunction of the A/T, gears not changing properly, loss of power... and later permanent damage to transmission and other components.
Whenever you get your car for an engine service ask the mechanic to check the trans fluid as well. Or contact me and I can come check it for you. I will only service A/Ts from Japanese cars due to big variety of fluids in other brands.

Thank you

AMM tip 19: Lights

At least once a month remember to check that your lights are all working.
One headlight, brake light or even number plate light not working can get you a fine or best case you will get pull over and leave with a warning.
Do not use fog lights unless it is fog, specially the rear ones. They are much brighter then any other back light, which can make drivers behind you confused, possibly causing a crash. And do not use high bean if it is fog.
Durring rainy days visibility drops a lot, so its good to have headlights on even during the day.
Check with NZTA if your LED or any kind of light modification is legal before you do it.
You dont want those blue and red lights following you haha

AMM tip 18: Pre purchase inspection

Before buying a car make sure to get AMM to inspect it, so you can be sure you are not buying a lemon.
At the end of the inspection you will know what is needed to be done next service and WOF, I will give you an idea of the costs for repairs, which helps to negotiate the car for a fair price.
PPIs cost only $60 (depending on where it is) but it could save you thousands with repairs it might need.

AMM tip 17: Coolant leak
Coolant, antifreeze or water additive is a product to keep the radiator (engine) water from freezing or boiling and prevent rust problems in the cooling system.
Cars when working properly do not use any water, so if you are having to top up the radiator water, it means that there is a leak somewhere, external (usually cheap to fix and you should notice coolant on the floor) or internal (usually expensive to fix and you can notice smoke out of the exhaust or water in oil)
Make sure to check the water level often and if you notice any sign of water leak, get it inspected, before you have a major problem like engine seizure.
Thank you

AMM tip 16: Misfuelling

What to do if you filled up with the wrong fuel.
The soon you realise the better.
Do not start the car or turn the key to the on position. Push the car to a safe place. Call me and I will come drain the wrong fuel and make sure everything is good.
If you already started the car turn it off asap, specially if your car is diesel and you put petrol. Diesel fuel helps lubricate, petrol on the other hand makes it dry. So diesel components running on petrol will work a lot harder, with much more friction, potentialy breaking key components, like, fuel pump, injectors, filter...
