After the Ford Mustang’s 1-2 finish at Bathurst over the weekend, we’re looking back at another iconic chapter in Ford racing history, Brendan Mason’s 1971 XY Falcon GT-HO Phase III. 💙

Originally imported to NZ in November 1971 for Kiwi race car driver Robbie Francevic to compete at the Christmas Grand Prix meeting at Pukekohe, this example features a special hand-finished engine.

Under the bonnet is a 351 Cleveland High Performance V8, paired with a four-speed Top Loader gearbox and Detroit Locker differential. The Phase III earned a reputation as one of the fastest four-door production cars in the world at the time, and remains one of the most collectable Australian performance cars ever built.

Brendan keeps this piece of motoring history in pristine condition and running at its best. You'll be able to see it up close at the 11th Annual Falcon GT South Island Car Show!

Of the 10 XY GT-HOs imported into NZ, six will be on display, alongside an impressive line-up featuring the full range of Falcon GTs ever produced.

Sometimes the best tool in the toolbox is a mate with the right gear.

Early Thursday morning, we got a call from a local business - one of their utes had had a bit of an oopsie and gone off the road. No problem, that's what we do.

Only trouble was, it was VERY off the road; in fact, it was in a ditch deep enough to almost qualify as underground. The easiest way to get it out was likely going to cause more damage and block Fawcetts Road (great way to impress the neighbours). That ruled out the easy way.

Time to phone a friend!

Enter our mate Brodie from Winch u towing & 4wd recovery.

Brodie rocks up in his tricked-out 4WD Recovery Nissan Patrol, flicks on the freewheeling hubs and gets into position. With Brodie winching, Ashlii steering and David “supervising” (aka staying out of everyone’s way), it was out of the ditch, onto the truck and off to the panel shop with repairable damage.

No damage, no road closures, no dramas.

The other day we got a call from the AA to collect a vehicle that had been in an accident – nothing particularly unusual.

Until I got to a sign that said “winding road next 40km.” The seal disappeared, the road narrowed, and what followed felt like 400km of rough, bumpy, corrugated gravel road. By the time I got there (around 90 minutes later), pretty much everything that had been in the cab of my truck was on the floor and I’m fairly sure I’d lost a couple of fillings along the way, but what a drive; the scenery was absolutely stunning.

We spend so much time driving around North Canterbury that it’s easy to take it for granted, but that job reminded me just how lucky we are to live and work in this part of the world.

School holidays are here, so there’ll be a lot more of us out and about with kids, bags, bikes and everything else crammed into the car.

If you’re heading away, even just for the day, take five minutes before you leave to check your tyres, oil, coolant and fuel. It’s a lot easier doing it at home than trying to sort something out on the side of the road.

If things don’t go to plan, give us a call.
