Thinking about heading into the backcountry this winter?

Join leading experts Sam Stevenson, Head of Ski Patrol at Coronet Peak, IFMGA-certified mountain guide Will Rowntree, and Intensive Care Paramedic Jodie Burton from Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter Trust for an evening built around the realities of moving through alpine terrain, and the decision making that separates a good day from a bad one.

Through short talks, Q&A sessions, and hands-on transceiver practice, you'll gain the knowledge and confidence to move more safely and intentionally through Queenstown's alpine environment.

Mountain Club Global Membership gives you access to a network of leading clubs around the world. We caught up with Charlotte Instone, who has used her membership across New Zealand, Australia, London, and the USA, to hear how the experience has shaped her travels and connections.

Did anything unexpected happen during your visit to The Battery that perfectly summed up what being part of a global community means to you?

"During my time at The Battery in San Francisco, I met the author of a book I’d just read, then later sat next to an investor working on climate projects. Neither meeting was planned, but that's what made them so memorable. Those conversations left me feeling less like a visitor in San Francisco and more like part of a global community - that’s what's special."

As a Mountain Club Global Member, how did it feel arriving in a city on the other side of the world and instantly having a place to work, connect, or unwind?

"One of the most valuable parts of Global Membership is knowing that wherever I travel, I have a trusted place to land. Arriving in San Francisco, it was reassuring to have somewhere comfortable to work, relax after a day of exploring, or simply enjoy a great coffee. Rather than feeling like a visitor trying to find my way around, I felt connected from day one."

If you could describe the power of having access to a global network of clubs in one sentence, what would you say to someone considering Global Membership?

"Global Membership means that no matter where you are in the world, you're never arriving as a stranger - you're arriving as part of a community."

Our Global membership opens a world of extraordinary experiences. Get in touch with [email protected] to find out more.

In our latest Mountain Club Podcast episode, Paddy sits down with Pete Seligman for a conversation exploring the growing momentum behind through acquisition (EtA) across Australia and New Zealand, and why buying existing businesses is becoming an increasingly compelling alternative to starting from scratch.

Together, they unpack what makes a successful EtA ecosystem, from community and investor alignment to the relationship between operators and the businesses they choose to lead.

The conversation explores succession planning, long-term ownership, and the growing opportunity for entrepreneurs to step into and grow existing businesses across Australia and New Zealand.

Set against the backdrop of Queenstown, Pete also reflects on why places like this are attracting ambitious people looking to build businesses differently, balancing growth, lifestyle, and meaningful connection.

Thank you Pete for sharing your perspective, experience, and insights into the future of ownership and entrepreneurship. Listen to the full episode on the Mountain Club Podcast. Link in comments.

COMING UP IN JUNE

We start the month with our Monthly AI Meet Up, followed by The Future of Sustainability in Queenstown Panel for World Environment Day. We’ll hear from industry leaders sharing insights on how local businesses can move beyond “sustainability” toward actively restoring ecosystems and communities.

Upcoming tasting session with Mondillo Wines brings us together around the table for great conversation and local wine. Search and Rescue Dogs Avalanche NZ: The dogs behind avalanche search and rescue return for a two-part series - an opportunity to meet the dogs and learn how they train, followed by a live avalanche search and rescue demonstration at Coronet Peak.

Mid-month brings a Live Mountain Club Podcast on the Future of Fashion & Creativity in Aotearoa, exploring the forces redefining the industry, led by Clare Irons. Then a relaxed evening of connection and conversation, hosted by NZ Global Women- the network uniting some of Aotearoa’s most influential leaders driving systemic change.

Later in the month we head Into the Backcountry for an introduction to the alpine environment with Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter Trust, Coronet Ski Patrol, and IFMGA-certified mountain guide Will Rowntree for an evening of practical education in preparation for winter, and our weekly Thursday Ski Touring restarting.

The past two weeks at Mountain Club.

An industry-led conversation with Mike Casey and Mat Woods at our Mountain Club Live Podcast had us thinking about the future of Queenstown and how close we are to becoming a fully electrified town. History was made at the first ever Aotearoa Stone Skimming Championships, where we enjoyed spectating some phenomenal skimming talent at the beautiful Lake Hāwea Station.

This brings us to our Wellness Morning in support of Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Foundation NZ. The morning brought an incredible group of women together, and we raised a total of $1,875 towards the cause.

The Search and Rescue Dogs Avalanche NZ visited us at Beach St, where we enjoyed plenty of pats alongside insight into the role SARDA plays in mountain safety. We finished with an Industry Leaders session featuring Richard Fletcher, CEO of Aurora Energy, who shared a fascinating look at the future of energy and the exciting opportunities ahead.

The backcountry holds a special place for many of us, but with that comes an awareness of the risks involved.

Last night we gained an incredible insight into the work of Search and Rescue Dogs Avalanche (Search and Rescue Dogs Avalanche NZ). These dogs are one of the fastest and most effective tools for locating buried people under the snow, and we’re incredibly lucky to have teams across the South and North Island responding when people need help in the mountains.

It was great hearing from the handlers about the level of trust, communication, and ongoing training required to operate as a team, while also having the chance to ask plenty of questions, meet Bomber and Tsuki, and give them a well earned pat.

A huge thank you to Taz, Brad and Sam from SARDA for sharing their stories and expertise with us.

Next up, we’re heading to Coronet Peak for a live avalanche rescue demonstration with SARDA to see the dogs and handlers in action on the snow. Join us on Thursday 25 June, followed by an optional ski tour before work.
