Not every canvas job is something you see every day. 👀

This custom stone guard was made to help protect a car being towed behind a caravan, giving the front of the vehicle some extra protection from stones, road spray and whatever else the road decides to throw at it.

It’s another example of the kind of practical, custom projects we make here in the Motueka workshop.

A first for Lana. 👏

After learning her way around the workshop, Lana headed out with Emma to help with an installation.

There’s only so much you can learn from a workbench. Getting out on site, seeing how everything comes together and helping with the final fit is all part of the learning.

These might be our best marine squabs yet. 👀

We’ll be honest, this set turned out pretty special.

Made with a beautiful James Dunlop fabric, these marine squabs have the kind of texture and detail that’s hard to capture in a photo. But the good looks are only part of it.

Every set starts with a pattern made specifically for the boat, with careful attention to the fit, fabric and finish. It’s a slower process, but it makes all the difference once the cushions are back on deck.

We’ve put together a little behind-the-scenes look at what goes into making custom marine squabs, why fabric choice matters and how we build them to handle life on the water.

The common thread? Every project starts with a specific need, a bit of problem-solving and a team who enjoys figuring out how to make it work.

It all started with a terrible tent. 😅

When Rowan was 14, he made a tent so he could ride his bike around New Zealand. By his own admission, it wasn’t exactly a masterpiece.

But that first, slightly questionable tent sparked something bigger: a love of making things, solving problems and figuring out how materials work.

Fast-forward 40 years, and Rowan is still in the workshop, still making things by hand, and still finding ways to turn an idea into something real.

From that first tent to custom canvas work, marine covers, shade sails and everything in between, it’s been quite a journey.

And thankfully, the tents have improved. 😉

A night out of the workshop for a change. ✨

Emma and Phoenix headed along to the ATA NZ Awards for Excellence, a night celebrating the people and craftsmanship behind the industrial textiles industry.

A chance to dress up, catch up, share a few stories and celebrate the work that goes on behind the scenes.

And yes, we came home with a few things to celebrate ourselves. 😉 We’re very proud of the people behind Tasman Canvas and the work that happens in our Motueka workshop every day.
