This little racer didn’t just make laps — it made memories.

This 1937 American Midget Speedway Racer arrived in New Zealand with Roy Richter for the 1938/39 season at Western Springs. Built small, light, and fierce, these cars were made for close racing, brave drivers, and noisy nights under the lights.

After years of racing around New Zealand, #33 was eventually retired at the end of the 1960/61 season. Decades later, former owner and driver Dave Lichtenstein found the car again — this time in pieces.

With the help of Wally Price, the long restoration began, bringing #33 back to the way it once was. Then, more than 50 years after stepping away from racing, Dave got back behind the wheel at Western Springs, driving it as the pace car for the new millennium season.

A proper piece of speedway history, and a pretty special one to have here at Southward Car Museum.
