Another full day of wheels, tracks and roller endorsements completed.

One of the things I always remind trainees is that we have access to a wide range of machines, and when you turn up on the day, you don’t necessarily know exactly what you’ll be operating.

That’s deliberate. The aim isn’t just to get you through an endorsement on one particular machine. It’s about developing the knowledge, skills and confidence to safely operate different types of plant and understand the differences between them.

Wheels, tracks, rollers and different machines all have their own characteristics, controls and hazards. You need to be prepared for whatever turns up in the workplace.

Another busy day, another group of operators gaining valuable experience and confidence. Well done guys — keep the wheels turning and the tracks moving!

Just finished an intensive training period with school bus drivers and SESTA drivers around the Palmerston North area.

A big well done to everyone involved. It’s great to see such positive reactions to the training and, just as importantly, such a positive attitude towards the job itself.

Driving school buses and SESTA vehicles comes with a lot of responsibility. You’re not just moving passengers from A to B — you’re responsible for the safety, comfort and wellbeing of some of the most vulnerable people on the road.

It’s been good to see drivers engaging with the training, asking questions and being prepared to look at their own driving and how they can improve.

Now I’m off to Kapiti next week for more of the same — hopefully!

Thanks for the effort and positive attitude. Keep up the good work. Professional drivers really do make a difference every day.

What’s changing
Following consultation earlier this year, the Minister of Transport announced changes to improve lane use that will:

allow children up to 12 years old to ride bikes on footpaths and allow parents or caregivers to ride with them.

require a minimum passing gap of 1.5 metres when drivers pass other road users

allow people to ride e-scooters in cycle lanes

require road users to give way to buses leaving bus stops in areas with speed limits of 60km/h or less.

The changes will make lane use safer by making the rules clearer for people using bikes and e-scooters, footpath users, drivers and other road users.

They respond to issues raised by road users, councils, and advocacy organisations and reflect how people currently use roads and footpaths.
