Meet Steve 🔧🏁

Steve’s one of those mechanics who’s been around engines long enough that there’s not much he hasn’t seen, fixed, pulled apart… or had an opinion on. 😂

He’s a seriously skilled mechanic with a wealth of knowledge and experience — the sort of guy you want around when something has everyone else scratching their heads.

And when he’s not fixing cars, there’s a fair chance he’s talking about motorsport. Steve loves anything that goes fast, but go-kart racing is right up there. 🏎️💨

He’s also pretty good at delivering a diagnosis:

“What do you reckon, Steve?”
“Yeah… she’s pretty ..........sounds like ducked 😉😉.”

He’s experienced, knowledgeable and has a knack for telling it like it is 😂

“Is it bad, Steve?”
“Yep.”

“Can we save it?”
“Nope.”

“Are you sure?”

Straight to the point. No unnecessary suspense. 😂

Just one workshop tip — don’t ask him to sing.
He’s very talented with engines and all things cars. We’ll leave it there.

Well... this definitely isn't something you see every day! 👀

We've had plenty of interesting vehicles through the workshop over the years... but this one is right up there with the coolest.

Meet this Daimler Ferret Mk1 – an ex-New Zealand Army reconnaissance vehicle from the 1960s. And yes... its fun the drive😎

It's probably the only customer who's not too worried about potholes, speed bumps... or who gets the last park at the supermarket. 😂

Safe to say it's earned a spot on our list of the most memorable vehicles to roll through the workshop. Thanks for bringing this piece of history in – we loved having a closer look!

🔧 This week's Tuesday Throwback goes to our man, Clay!😎

Every workshop has that one person who's impossible to miss... and at Otorohanga Automotive, that's our Clay.

He's always smiling, singing or having a laugh! And he NEVER feels the cold ❄❄

Four years ago, Clay joined the Otorohanga Automotive team after moving back to the King Country. His first day was Valentines Day, while his wife was still in Auckland. We still reckon that took some explaining!

Since day one, he's been the guy with the biggest smile in the workshop, the quickest laugh, and somehow always has enough energy to wrestle tyres around like they're made of cardboard. 💪🛞

A few things we've learnt about Clay over the years...
💇 Owns what is arguably the best hair in Ōtorohanga... and possibly the entire King Country.
🧀 Has a serious weakness for mac & cheese.
🍞 Makes THE best fry bread (the verdict is unanimous!)

Whether he's changing tyres, fixing vehicles, singing or bringing in homemade fry bread Clay always brings a smile to the workshop.

Thanks for an awesome four years Clay!

This week's throwback goes to Dylan!

From apprentice to fully qualified mechanic, Dylan has been part of the Otorohanga Automotive family for 8 years. He's one of those genuinely cruisy, reliable people who's always up for a laugh and is a hugely valued member of our team.

The only thing that gets him moving faster than a toolbox? The sound of the Mr Whippy van... especially if thick shakes are on the menu! 🍦😂

🔧 Is your Kia or Hyundai making a clunking, clicking or rattling noise through the steering wheel?

We've seen quite a few of these lately! A common cause is a worn-out steering column coupler "donut" – a small rubber component that can deteriorate over time.

Symptoms can include:
✔️ Clunking when turning the wheel
✔️ Rattling through the steering column
✔️ Excessive play in the steering

The photo shows a brand-new coupler compared to one we've replaced in a customers car.
