⚓️Proud to Sponsor the R. Tucker Thompson ⚓️

"The Good Ship"

At Tub Scrub Hull Cleaning Solutions, we’re incredibly proud to announce that we are now sponsoring the R. Tucker Thompson’s youth development vessel hull-cleaning regime...

Completely free of charge...

As a small, local in-water hull-cleaning business, being asked to provide this service is genuinely an honour. And it’s something we’re proud to contribute to, because keeping this incredible vessel clean, efficient and functioning properly helps ensure she can continue doing what she does best, providing life changing experiences for the young people of Northland...

The R. Tucker Thompson is a traditional gaff-rigged topsail schooner...

Launched on October 12, 1985, at Mangawhai, New Zealand, she was conceived in the late 1970s by Robert "Tucker" Thompson to blend 19th-century working ship design with modern marine technology. Design and construction started in Little Munro Bay (Whangarei Heads) and finished in Mangawhai...

Modelled after fast, sea-kindly 19th-century Northwest American halibut schooners. She features varnished Oregon pine spars, Kwila hardwood decks, and brass details over a watertight steel hull...

Gifted a spiritual guardian (Kaitiaki), Karewa, during her launch on completion by Tucker’s son Tod Thompson and builder Russell Harris after Tucker's passing...

She was operated privately until Russell Harris bought out shares in 1992, and then transferred into a charitable trust on June 6, 2006, to permanently serve the people of Te Tai Tokerau, Northland...

Based in Opua in the stunning Bay of Islands, she now operates tourism day sails from October to April to fund operations, and youth development and sail training voyages from May to September focusing on Northland teenagers personal growth and development...

Youth Development Programme:

The ship transitions into a training vessel during the cooler months running 7 day voyages, designed specifically for teenagers aged 14–18yrs old...

The trainees learn safety at sea, meteorology, traditional seamanship, and Polynesian Celestial Navigation...

The cultural focus incorporates a strong Te Ao Māori approach with a Tuakana-Teina (older-to-younger sibling) mentoring dynamic...

Technical Sailing Specifications:

She is built to combine traditional aesthetic design with robust 20th-century safety standards typical with a gaff-rigged topsail schooner.

Dimensions:

Overall length (LOA) is 18 metres with a 6-metre width and a 2.6-metre draft...

Hull Construction:

Formed of 6mm steel with 3 watertight bulkheads and a steel deck overlaid with durable Kwila hardwood...

Sail Area & Power:

Carries a total sail area of 179 square metres (3,000 sq ft) alongside a backup 180 horsepower John Deere diesel engine...

Capacity:

Safely holds a displacement of 60 tonnes and accommodates up to 47 passengers on day charters...

The R. Tucker Thompson is so much more than a sailing ship...

She is a place where young Northlanders are challenged, encouraged and given opportunities to discover confidence, resilience, leadership, teamwork and a belief in themselves...

And we here at Tub Scrub Hull Cleaning Solutions think that is incredibly important...

These are the experiences that help shape outstanding young people and ultimately, outstanding Northlanders...

We also want to acknowledge the incredible staff, crew, volunteers and everyone behind the scenes who keep her sailing and continue to pour their time, energy, love and passion into what she provides for our youth...

The commitment and selflessness that goes into maintaining this vessel and the programme around her is truly inspiring...

We have enormous respect for every one of you...

So from all of us at Tub Scrub Hull Cleaning Solutions thank you for allowing us to play a small part in keeping this amazing ship doing what she does best...

It is an absolute privilege to support the R. Tucker Thompson, her crew, and most importantly, the young people of Northland who step aboard her...

We are proud to keep her clean...

Proud to support her mission...

Proud to support our Northland youth.

Had the pleasure of helping out a couple of legends Roger and Robin yesterday, who are restoring one of only two of the 15 historical WW2 inshore patrol vessels left that float and are operational...

The guy's gave me a crew shirt which I'll cherish with pride, cheers guy's!!!

The former WW2 RNZN HDML P3552 PAEA down in Whangārei...

HMNZS Paea (P3552), originally designated as HDML Q 1184, is a 72foot Harbour Defence Motor Launch built in the United States in 1942–1943...

Commissioned into the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN), she served active coastal roles from 1943 through to 1985, later transitioning into private ownership and historical preservation.

Wartime and Post-War Service Construction:

She was built on the West Coast of the United States as part of the Allied motor launch wartime expansion program (Q 1184).

Early Duties:

Laid up briefly after World War II in 1945 before recommissioning.

Fisheries Protection:

Commissioned into active fishery protection patrols in the early 1950s, formally named Paea in 1955.

Hydrographic Survey:

Repainted white and deployed for coastal inshore hydrographic surveying around New Zealand from 1975 to 1977.

RNZNVR Duties:

Allocated to Royal New Zealand Navy Volunteer Reserve (RNZNVR) divisions for training until paid off and decommissioned in April 1985.

Restoration and Legacy Civilian Acquisition:

Sold out of the navy in December 1984, subsequently undergoing extensive private restorations in Picton and Auckland to preserve her heritage configuration.

HMNZS Paea (P3552 / Q1184) was configured to standard Admiralty specifications for the HDML fleet.

Technical & Engine Specifications/Hull Construction:

Built out of double-diagonal mahogany on oak frames to optimize durability and lightness.

Dimensions:

Had an overall length of 72 feet (22 metres), a beam of 16 feet, and a draft of 5.3 feet.

Displacement:

Logged at approximately 54 tonnes standard displacement.

Original Propulsion:

Equipped with two Gray Marine diesel engines generating roughly 330 brake horsepower (bhp).

Top Speed:

Capable of reaching 10 to 12 knots via its twin shafts.

Post-War Upgrade:

Repowered later in her career with highly reliable, twin Foden 12-cylinder engines to extend operational life.

Historical Deployment Logs1943–1945:

Commissioned as HDML Q1184. Deployed on anti-submarine harbour patrols and coastal escorts across New Zealand ports.

Post War Life 1946–1953:

Laid up briefly in late 1945. Recommissioned as HMNZS Philomel (1946) and HMNZS P3553 (1950).

During World War II, HMNZS Paea (Q1184) was outfitted with a versatile, heavy-hitting armament suite optimized for anti-submarine warfare and close-range defense.

Like other New Zealand HDML flotilla vessels, her wartime configuration consisted of the following weapons:

Anti-Submarine Warfare:

8 x Depth Charges carried on the aft deck, deployed via rolling chutes to target enemy submarines detected by her onboard Type 134 ASDIC (sonar) system.

Primary Guns:

1 x 20mm Oerlikon Cannon mounted on a single pedestal on the stern cabin roof. This high-angle/low-angle automatic weapon served dual purposes for surface combat and anti-aircraft defense.

1 x Twin-Mount .50-Calibre Browning Machine Guns, a water cooled, heavy-calibre dual setup typically placed on the forward deck to deliver sustained firepower against surface targets.

Defensive Machine Guns:

2 x Twin-Mount .303 Vickers Machine Guns mounted on either side of the open bridge to counter aircraft, floating mines, or close-range surface threats.

Peacetime Disarmament:

Following the conclusion of World War II in 1945, all armaments and depth charge equipment were permanently stripped from the vessel. For her remaining 40 years of service in fisheries protection, hydrographic surveying, and volunteer reserve training, she remained entirely unarmed.

1954–1974:

Formally renamed HMNZS Paea in 1955. Transferred to the Fishery Protection Squadron, monitoring New Zealand's exclusive waters.

1975–1977:

Retrofitted as an inshore hydrographic survey craft, mapping shallow coastal waters.

1978–1985:

Assigned to the Royal New Zealand Navy Volunteer Reserve (RNZNVR) division as a hands-on seamanship and navigation training vessel until she was paid off in April 1985.

Crew Rosters & Complement/Wartime Complement:

Typically carried 10 crew members, consisting of 2 officers and 8 ratings.

Living Conditions:

Crew quarters were incredibly cramped. The narrow, shallow hull design caused notorious instability in rough seas, making long patrols physically exhausting for the crew.

Post-War Training:

Expanded capacity up to 17 personnel during her reserve training years to accommodate students and instructors...

Significance:

She now remains only one of two out of the original 15 rare surviving RNZN HDML vessels preserved in functional condition by classic maritime enthusiasts and custodians in New Zealand.

A truly awesome piece of New Zealand maritime history, and a privilege to work on.

⚓️PROFESSIONAL IN-WATER HULL CLEANING SERVICES ⚓

Whangārei • Bay of Islands • Doubtless Bay • Houhora.

It’s been another seriously busy week here at Tub Scrub Hull Cleaning Solutions, and what a week it’s been!

From a 100ft superyacht, to an 80ft monohull, and then onto something very special indeed, the 72ft historic former RNZN WW2 inshore patrol vessel P3552 Paea...

Every vessel is different, and that’s one of the things I love about this job...

This week I had the absolute privilege of working with Captain Rob, an absolute LEGEND on Pacific H.Q a magnificent 100ft superyacht, followed by the beautiful 80ft monohull Voodoo...

Then came P3552 HDML Paea one of only two of the original 15 vessels of her type that remain afloat and operational, with the other being in Invercargill. Paea is a remarkable piece of New Zealand maritime history, and it was really special to be able to play a very small part in helping keep her in the water...

I'd also like to give a huge thank you to Roger and Robin, who are undertaking the restoration of Paea. Not only are they doing an incredible job preserving this piece of history, but they’re also genuinely great guys, who provided me with plenty of laughs in some fairly bleak conditions...

And as if working on Paea wasn’t cool enough, they kindly gave me one of their “Paea Crew” shirts as a thank you...

AWESOME! ⚓🇳🇿

It’s weeks like this that truly do remind me just how lucky I am to do what I do...
