🚗💨 Radiators used to be absolute chaos…

Back in the early days of motoring, overheating wasn’t a breakdown — it was *standard procedure*. Cars would literally start boiling, drivers would pull over, wait for the steam show to finish, and carry on like nothing happened.

Early radiators weren’t sealed either… so they leaked, evaporated, and occasionally collected a bit of “wildlife enrichment” while parked up. Maintenance sometimes included removing bugs, dust… and whatever else moved in.

Before modern coolant, manufacturers experimented with alcohol mixes to stop freezing in winter. It worked… technically.
But drivers quickly realised the downside:
if you had a leak, your cooling system could slowly evaporate into fumes. Not ideal. Let’s just say it didn’t take long for that idea to be replaced. Modern ethylene glycol-based coolant came later and solved the freezing issue without turning your radiator into a distillery.

Then came pressurised systems — a proper game changer — lifting boiling points, reducing overheating, and finally making engines behave themselves.

In the early days, mufflers weren’t standard. Some drivers actually removed them on purpose because:

more noise = “more power” (they thought)
quiet cars were seen as “weak”
