Nelson Boating Community Ensuring all Nelson boaties have access to a safe and user friendly marina, boat ramp and trailer pa Your time is here now Nelson. Join and share this page.

The Nelson boating community is growing fast but much needed improvements to facilities are lagging behind. While NCC have increased the marina berths and allowed moorings to be established in the Haven, there is still a growing waiting list. The power boat, trailer sailer, rowing club, waka-ama, sea scouts and cadets, all using the boat ramp, are struggling with out dated facilities that are not

only un-safe but no longer meet anyones needs. With summer queues that stretch from the ramp all the way down Akersten street its time our boating community had a voice and was heard on what we would like to see to help alleviate some of the congestion and help plan for a better future. This page is for you to get your views heard and become a voice for our local boating community. We want your opinion, your views and help to make Nelson the best boating facility in New Zealand.

Help Us Keep Our Waterfront Safe 💙

We’re reaching out to our community for support.

Over recent weeks, we’ve received a number of concerns/complaints about people swimming, jumping from restricted wharves and vessels, and accessing privately berthed vessels off the Coastal Berth.

While we understand the draw of the water, especially during the warmer months, these wharves are private areas and are not open to public access.

Unauthorised access can:
• Put swimmers and members of the public at risk
• Create safety issues around vessels and operations
• Interfere with private property
• Lead to damage or costly disruptions for boat owners (which has unfortunately occurred due to incidents over summer)

For everyone’s safety, these areas are monitored. Anyone entering without permission may be asked to leave, issued with a trespass notice under the Trespass Act 1980, or referred to Police.

We want our waterfront to be something the whole community can enjoy - safely and responsibly. If you’re spending time in this area, please stick to designated public areas and respect private wharves and vessels so that we can continue to keep the Coastal Berth open for public access.

We appreciate your help and support in keeping our port safe for everyone.

Do you think the pilot maneuvering this vessel can see a paddleboarder?

On Saturday, our marine team had to take action while piloting a vessel (not the vessel pictured) through the cut to avoid a paddleboarder. A paddleboarder was in the middle of that passage and was alerted by a pilot boat in front of the ship, which was being accompanied by two tug boats. The ship also sounded its whistle, and the pilot of the log ship was forced to stop its engine. Our pilot launch went into the middle of the channel and worked to get the paddleboarder safely out of the way.

Vessels under pilotage can’t manoeuvre easily or take avoiding action for smaller craft. When boats enter the channel during ship movements, it creates a real collision risk, not just for you, but also for the tugs and pilots working to safely guide these large vessels through our harbour.

To keep yourself safe, remember these tips before you head out on the water:
• Be aware a ship’s blind spot can extend for hundreds of metres.
• If the pilot vessel or Harbourmaster asks you to move from the shipping channels, you must move promptly.
• Remember that large ships need plenty of room and will be travelling a lot faster than you think, as they enter our harbour. This also means they cannot stop quickly.
• Do not cross the bow of a large ship, they cannot see you. Keep your distance.
• Check harbour movements and we**am feeds to see what’s happening
• Keep your situational awareness up and navigate with caution
