This client came in with high expectations. Chip repair, paint correction, and ceramic coating, all in one job.

They knew what they wanted, and they weren't easy to impress. Every chip filled with SmartChip, the paint corrected back to a glass-like finish, then sealed under a ceramic coating to hold that look.

Ever wondered what a ceramic coating actually does to your paint?

Look at a panel in cross-section and you can see the whole stack. First the steel body, then the anti-corrosion primer, the OEM colour coat, and the factory clear coat. That clear coat takes the punishment from UV and salt air, and it's the layer that oxidises and bleaches over time. Here in NZ, our strong UV and coastal salt give it a hard time.

The ceramic coating is bonded on top of the clear coat, only a few microns thick. It resists oxidation, blocks UV bleaching, and makes water bead and run off instead of sitting on your paint. Thin, hard, and easy to maintain, protecting everything underneath. 🚗

Had a couple of out of the ordinary jobs this week, and they were BIG!

2021 GMC 1500 Denali Truck - Full cut & polish for a local dealer, resulted in a SOLD truck.

Buccaneer Motorboat - This one had HEAVY buildup and oxidation across the Hull and upper cabin areas - Full cut & polish followed by a high quality marine sealant to slow the progress of this happening again.

Look beyond the odometer at lease return. Paint condition is what actually drives your reconditioning bill. Mileage tells you how far a vehicle travelled, and paint condition tells you what it will cost to hand back. A high-mileage vehicle with maintained paintwork can return cleaner than a low-mileage one that collected chips and oxidation sitting in a car park. Paint chips expose bare metal to moisture and oxygen the moment the clear coat breaks. In Hawke's Bay's coastal air and wet winters, rust can start forming under the surface within weeks, well before it becomes visible.

A $150 chip repair can turn into a full panel respray in under three months. That's the real cost of waiting.

The moment a stone chip breaks through your clear coat, bare metal is exposed to coastal salt air, UV, and winter moisture. Rust starts almost immediately, and it doesn't stay put. It creeps sideways under the surrounding paint, lifting the finish from underneath until the only fix is a respray of the whole panel.

Our technicians regularly find rust already forming beneath chips that owners describe as "only a few months old", especially on bonnets and lower panels that cop the worst of the road spray.

The "wait until I've got a few" approach makes sense on paper, but it almost always costs more by the time you actually book in. The right time to sort a chip is when you notice it, not when you've collected enough to feel like the trip is worth it.
