From the 1880s to 2026, skating continues to bring people together—whether you’re competing, cruising, or just coming along for a good time.

“Rinkomania” or the indoor roller-skating craze, spread across Aotearoa/New Zealand’s sport and recreational scene during the early 1880s. Indoor skating rinks sprang up across the country. Te Matau-a-Māui/Hawke’s Bay was not excluded from this nation-wide mania.
