A true Hawke’s Bay favourite is back! 🌾 Head to Tomoana Showgrounds on Kenilworth Road, Hastings, for two days of rural fun, with one falling on Hawke’s Bay Anniversary Day.

With Labour Day on Monday making it a super-long weekend, it’s the perfect opportunity to get out and enjoy some of the best of what the region has to offer!☀️

🌿 Shine Falls walking track set to reopen Friday 23 October! 💦

Great news for Hawke’s Bay walkers! After being closed since Cyclone Gabrielle in February 2023, the Shine Falls walking track near Tūtira is expected to reopen from Friday 23 October 2026, just in time for the Hawke’s Bay Anniversary and Labour Day long weekend!

This beautiful walk winds through farmland and native forest to one of the region’s much-loved waterfalls. The return walk takes around 1.5 hours and is a great option for a family adventure. 🥾🌳

The track includes some uphill sections, but the stream crossings are bridged, making them easier to navigate. Around 25 metres of track has required a full rebuild to restore access to this spectacular spot.

Planning a visit? Here’s how to get there:
🚗 Allow around 1.5 hours’ drive from Napier. Head north-east on SH2 for approximately 43.5 km until you see the Shine Falls sign, then turn left onto Matahorua Road. After 11 km, turn left onto Heays Access Road and continue for another 6.5 km until you reach the DOC car park on your left, where you’ll find a picnic table.

⚠️ A handy tip: There are no toilets at the car park, so make sure you stop beforehand!

🚗 NEW ROAD RULES – FROM TODAY, 1 OCTOBER 2026 🚦

If you’re out and about on Hawke’s Bay roads, there are some new road rules to be aware of from today.

Here’s a quick rundown of the changes 👇

🚲 Give cyclists & other road users 1.5m space
When passing people who aren’t driving a motor vehicle — including cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders travelling in the same direction — drivers must leave a minimum 1.5 metres of space. If it’s not safe to pass, slow down and wait until it is.

👧 Children can ride bikes on footpaths
Children 12 years old and under can now ride their bikes on footpaths. Parents and caregivers can ride alongside them too to support them.

🛴 E-scooters can use cycle lanes
E-scooter riders can now legally use designated cycle lanes. Remember to share the space safely and be considerate of other road users.

🚌 Give way to buses leaving bus stops
Drivers must give way to buses pulling out from bus stops on roads with a speed limit of 60km/h or less. Give buses plenty of room to re-enter the traffic flow.
