It’s World Car Free Day!

Today is World Car Free Day, encouraging people around the globe to leave the car at home for the day and choose another way to get around.

Of course, car-free days aren’t entirely new to New Zealand! Back in 1979, Kiwis were introduced to compulsory “carless days”. Private petrol-powered vehicles had to display a coloured windscreen sticker showing the one day each week they weren’t allowed to be driven. The scheme lasted until May 1980.

Thankfully, today’s World Car Free Day is completely voluntary!

Who remembers New Zealand’s carless days of the 1970s? We’d love to hear your memories.
