🎬 That’s a Wrap!
After more than two decades of mahi, memories, and making things happen, One on One Driving is winding up operations
To everyone we've supported, worked alongside, laughed with, problem-solved with, and learned from—thank you. You've made this more than just a job. It's been meaningful, challenging, rewarding, and full of purpose.
Our adventures don't end here—they're just changing shape:
🚗 Jay is still instructing (you can find him through his business, Challenge Driving School 0276877597)
🚍 Peter will never retire—we’ve stopped pretending he might. He finally gets more time for his holidays and photography
🌿 Carolynn is moving to the country with her new husband, their many animals and big plans involving gumboots, gardens and the good life
We’re incredibly proud of the impact One on One has had.
The organisation may be winding down, but the cool stories, the laughs and the banter carry on with us—especially the workmates who became family along the way.

The past two years have been full throttle for us at One on One! While we’ve been quiet here, we’ve been anything but idle, with over 1,000 interactions annually helping students achieve their driving goals.

We’re proud to share that this year:
✅ 75% of our students who sat their restricted licence passed.
✅ A massive 95% of those who sat their full licence also passed.
Your hard work and commitment make these incredible stats possible, and we couldn’t be prouder of our students!

This year also saw a shift as our main instructor, Peter, reduced his hours (we’re all getting a little older!) but our team is still going strong, hitting big milestones together. 🙌

As we wrap up 2024, we want to say a huge thank you to our students, instructors, and supporters for being part of this journey. Your trust in us means everything.

Sometimes Carolynn is allowed out of the office - today we got to hang out and meet all the Work and Income case managers that we've talked and emailed with for 2 years but never met face to face thanks to COVID! Peter, on the left, is our amazing trainer, Carolynn, who is your first point of contact, in the middle and Jim, our buddy from Go Bus on the right.
We run a Bus Driver Training Programme 3 times a year - a great employment opportunity and not one you may have considered - message us for info!

Happy New Year! Introducing our 'other' driving instructor Jay... well we would, except he's on holiday and he's behind the camera in this picture.
Jay has been with us as a part time instructor for aaaaages and is also the owner of Challenge Driving School.
Jay has been instructing for around 40 years, so he's nearly as good as our main man Pete. Jay has awful taste in coffee and dad jokes but fit right in with our small team and their love of bad jokes. We're working on the coffee issue, but rest assured, no instant will ever be made in our office.

If you are learning to drive or you are helping someone to learn then remember New Zealand Transport Agency have a great site with tools to help both learner and trainer to do the right thing. Head over to https://drive.govt.nz/ and check out the guides and videos. They will help to get all levels of licence.

Here's our pass rates for driving tests (in blue) compared with 2018 NZTA figures (green) averaged over 12 months for Canterbury.

We're pretty happy with how we performed. THANK YOU to the 600+ people we've helped with driving over the last year. Not bad for 1 trainer and his awesome side kick.

We are back in business! Yes, we are open and running Class 1 and Class 2 training.

Peter and I are trying to remember how to do our jobs, and readjusting to not wearing trackpants and slippers all day.....

COVID19 UPDATE
We have made the difficult decision to suspend all in car lessons, assessments and tests until further notice due to the COVID19 crisis.

With the close proximity between an instructor and student in a vehicle, it is not possible to self-distance and we are doing our part to protect the health of our customers and instructors.

We are sorry to have to communicate this news and will advise as soon as we return to business as normal.

Nearly 144,000 expiring learners and restricted licences will be renewed for a further two years.

Pete gets all the fun jobs! He was at the Holden Street Smart programme yesterday, shivering a little bit - but he got to use his dad jokes on a new audience.
