New vehicles with Advanced Driver Assistance and Automated Emergency Braking systems typically have a front radar mounted in the front bumper. So how are these affected when an aftermarket bumper is fitted due to a collision with a vehicle or animal? Or if the bumper is modified to enhance the look or performance of the vehicle?

The answer is – it depends. ADAS performance depends heavily on the correct position of the ADAS sensor and also the quality of the radome cover if the radar is behind the bumper and not exposed to the direct environment.

Our recommendation, in this case, is to complete a visual check, and physical measurement to compare the new radar placement to the OE standard. Calibration is needed, along with the expertise to pick up the factors that could lead to a false positive result.

Insurers are paying out for aftermarket bumpers to be fitted to vehicles every day in New Zealand. So, who should be held responsible if the systems designed to keep the driver safe are now not working as they should? Shouldn’t an ADAS calibration and check be a standard part of these repairs?

We are here to help guide insurers and collision repairers through this new issue affecting their industry. Find out more on our website: https://adasexperts.co.nz/ or give us a call at 0800 ADAS4U.

Eleven people in the US have died in crashes involving vehicles that were using automated driving systems...in just a four-month period. Part of an alarming pattern of incidents linked to driver reliance on technology.

We are lobbying for more awareness around Advanced Driver Assistance Systems and the road safety issues that can occur when drivers start relying on this technology without ongoing maintenance.

Did you know that New Zealand’s Vehicle Inspection Requirements have been updated to include Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) inspection upon initial registration or re-registration of a vehicle in NZ?

During certification, if a vehicle has an ADAS warning lamp illuminated, further diagnostic checks must be carried out. The vehicle is ‘flagged’ and an ADAS declaration must be obtained.

A person or company recognised as reputable, competent, and trained in the interrogation of automotive electronic control systems must be used. Once any issues are rectified, the ADAS declaration form is completed and retained with the vehicle file.

ADAS Experts are proud to be leading the way in ADAS inspections and declarations in Aotearoa. It’s great to see that a process we have lobbied for is now a requirement. Thanks to Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency for recognising ADAS regulation as an important issue for the ongoing safety of kiwi drivers.
