New Arrival at the Museum! 🚜✨

🐴 We’re excited to share the newest addition to our collection, a classic 1949 Massey-Harris Pony (Model 11), presented in beautiful unrestored condition with its original patina!

🚜 First introduced in 1947, the Pony was specifically engineered as a light, affordable row-crop tractor to replace draft horses on small farms and market gardens. Powered by its original Continental N62 4-cylinder engine, it became a beloved favorite for its maneuverability and reliable performance. Complete with its period-correct side sickle mower attachment, this piece is an authentic slice of working agricultural history.

So with Monday being a public holiday, be sure to stop in over the long weekend! We’re open 9:30 am to 4:00 pm. Come on down and check out this piece of history up close alongside the rest of our displays!

🚨 New Addition the '1956 Singer Hunter'

⚙️ Made in Coventry, England by Singer Motors Ltd.
⚙️ Engine: 1,497 cc (1.5L) Single Overhead Camshaft (SOHC) 4-cylinder
⚙️ Power & Transmission: ~48 bhp linked to a 4-speed manual transmission
⚙️ Interior: Polished walnut wood dash, twin glove boxes, and deep red upholstery
⚙️ Doors: Rear-hinged "su***de" doors

Singer gave the "Hunter" a literal mascot, a detailed, sculpted horse head sitting atop the classic upright chrome grille.
When launched in late 1954, early Hunters made headline news by using lightweight fibreglass (GRP) bonnets to save weight. However, heat warping and paint-matching issues forced Singer to abandon the composite bonnet and revert back to steel for later production runs like this 1956 example.
Only around 4,700 Hunters were ever built. It marked the very end of independent Singer-designed cars before future models became badge-engineered Hillmans under Rootes ownership.

Did you know only 2,100 Lanchester Ledas were ever built, and fewer than 50 are thought to exist in the world today? 🚗✨

We are beyond thrilled to announce that we now have one right here in Geraldine!

Manufactured in Coventry, England, by Daimler’s luxury sub-brand, this 1951 all-steel Leda Saloon is a genuinely rare survivor of post-war British motoring. It was engineered with a fully pressed-steel body originally built to withstand punishing Commonwealth export climates and featured no clutch pedal thanks to its clever 4-speed pre-selective gearbox and Daimler Fluid Flywheel!

A massive thank you to Rik Gant of Christchurch for generously donating this incredible vehicle to our collection. Beyond its global rarity, this car carries an unforgettable piece of local Canterbury history: the distinct dent in the side door was actually sustained during the 2000 Christchurch earthquake!

Swipe through to see Gavin Harris giving it a thorough hose-down and David Graham getting it all prepped for visitors.

Come down and take a look next time you're in town and experience a true piece of automotive history! 🚙💨

🎵 Check out this absolute beauty: a vintage British Columbia Viva-tonal Grafonola No. 109 portable gramophone, dating back to the mid-to-late 1920s!

🎼 This wonderful piece was generously donated by Ron Finch, continuing his incredible support after previously gifting
his entire camera collection to the museum.

🎙️ To test it out, Colin Sweetman is spinning a classic 1955 New Zealand pressing of "Hummingbird" by Les Paul and Mary Ford on the Capitol label. There is nothing quite like hearing the rich, warm sound of shellac on a spring-driven machine. Such a great piece of audio history!

🚜 Volunteers hard at work! 🛠️

We love a productive museum work day! Our members are always busy behind the scenes keeping our vintage treasures looking their best.

A big shoutout to Alastair Sabiston for getting our beautifully restored Mobil sign installed on the front of the Tractor Building, it looks incredible! Swipe to see the before and after.

Meanwhile, Bob Bright and Ian Webb were busy under the hood working on the 1947 Ford 2N. 🧑‍🔧

Thank you to all our volunteers for their hard work! ⚙️

⛽ A 1930s Mobil Pump with a Local Story!

⛽ Made in Sydney between 1935 and 1939, this dual-powered 'Gilbert & Barker (Gilbarco) clock-face pump' was installed on the late Gib Miller’s mixed-farming property in Orari in the 1960s. It worked reliably for 20-odd years before being replaced with a more modern pump in the 1980s.

⚡️ Built for rural reliability, it featured a clever dual-power design: if the electricity cut out, you simply inserted a hand lever to manually pump fuel. Gib’s son, Max Miller, recalls his grandfather using a tractor belt pulley on their Clandeboye farm to power a pump during outages and keep the milking shed running!

🚜 A huge thank you to the Miller family for donating this fantastic piece of local history, and to Alistair Lyon for his brilliant restoration work. Come check it out up close on your next visit!
