Over the season, we were incredibly lucky to have the support of some amazing local businesses and individuals from our community.

Thanks to their generous donations, our club was able to provide Juicies for the kids after each training session — something they all looked forward to on those hot afternoons or after a tough club run!

Your support added something extra to our training sessions, and the kids loved it. We really appreciate what you’ve done for our club and our young athletes.

A special thank you also goes to our wonderful Committee Member, Marni, who organised this every single week — your time and dedication made it all happen!

Advice to motorists, stay off the road if you can, Tangowahine Valley Road 4kms north of Avoca already impassable to all but large trucks. High tide due during the night and still a s**t ton of water to come down. Be safe out there.

At 9:30 last night a tired sailor attempted to cross the notorious Kaipara Bar from the North Entrance when a sudden wave capsized his 8m vessel. After it righted itself, he swam back, secured the hatches and called a mayday. By then the keel was hitting the beach, so he jumped overboard and made it to shore. A couple of hours later local police found him and took him to Park View Motel, where he was welcomed with a toasted sandwich and muesli bars around 1am.

The next day a motel worker offered their 4x4 so we could check the vessel at low tide. We got there around 5pm, dropped the mast and secured everything for the trip back to town. Apart from a drowned outboard, there was very little damage. We winched the boat onto the truck and headed back, getting a few bewildered looks along the way.

Huge thanks to Sam Hill and Scotty Vallance for the help. Pretty incredible the sailor is safe and the boat will be back on the water after a trailer ride home to Motueka. After a sad weekend, it’s nice to share a happy ending — and he’s blown away by the kindness of our little town.
