New lifejacket rules land 9 October: here's what changes for you
From 9 October 2026, the rules around wearing lifejackets on recreational craft are changing across New Zealand.
If you're aboard a recreational craft 6 metres or under, you need a lifejacket on the whole time you're underway. Doesn't matter what you're in - small motorboats, sailboats, yacht tenders, dinghies, kayaks, paddleboards and jet skis are all covered, if they're under that size. There are a few specific exclusions (like SUP surfing), but if that's not you, the rule applies.
For boaties, now's a good time to get across exactly what's changing - and to make sure every lifejacket on board actually fits the person who'll be wearing it.
Check your lifejackets before 9 October
Don't wait until the first proper boating weekend to discover someone's jacket doesnt fit. Pull your lifejackets out now and give them a proper check:
Straps and buckles are all working
Fabric is free of cuts, tears or deterioration
The jacket is still the right size, especially for growing kids
Labels check out, and it's still the right type for how you use the water.
