Another diagnostic … and a warning to Mazda 2.2 skyactiv-D owners. This diesel engine comes in a variety of Mazdas, most commonly seen in CX-5 and Atenza/6 variants. This vehicle came into us with an oil pressure lamp on. The first image is of the oil pick up filter screen, and it is completely blocked with carbon. The second image is of the top of the engine - valve cover, the oil/soot mix is a telltale sign of this issue occurring. What happens is the fuel injector lower nozzle washers fail overtime letting combustion gas past and into the valve cover, this then mixes and fouls the engine oil causing excessive carbon build up. And if not caught in time, oil starvation and complete engine failure. Luckily for this customer this problem was caught before any major engine damage could occur. However the repair is still in depth and costly. I cannot stress enough how important regular servicing is, and particularly for these engines, replacement of the injector nozzle washers before catastrophic damage occurs. This issue is generally seen around the 100k kms mark. If you own one of these and want it checked over let us know.
