New to Mazdaspeed and looking to get started with mods? Hereโs a rundown of the first power mods you should consider:
Upgraded Fuel Pump Internals
Mazdaspeed engines are notorious for having high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) limitations, especially when you start adding power. Upgrading the fuel pump internals is a must if youโre tuning your car. This upgrade ensures your engine gets the fuel it needs, especially at higher RPMs.
3.5โ Air Intake
A cold air intake is one of the most popular mods for good reason. It improves airflow, giving you a noticeable bump in throttle response and power. Plus, it adds that sweet spooly sound! Go custom to ensure quality fitment and gains.
Upgraded Intercooler
The stock intercooler does a decent job, but once you start pushing for more power, heat becomes an issue. A front-mount intercooler will help keep those intake temperatures down, ensuring your engine breathes cooler, denser air. This is crucial for maintaining performance, especially during hot summer drives or track days.
Downpipe and Exhaust
Opening up the exhaust is one of the best ways to free up some extra power. A high-flow downpipe reduces backpressure, allowing the turbo to spool quicker and making your Mazdaspeed feel more responsive. Pair it with a cat-back exhaust for an aggressive sound that matches the new performance.
Rear Motor Mount
The stock mount is known to be a weak spot, causing excessive engine movement, wheel hop, and sloppy shifts. Swapping it out for an upgraded mount improves power delivery, reduces vibrations, and tightens up the overall driving feel. Plus, itโs a relatively easy install.
One Step Colder Spark Plugs
Itโs a simple and affordable upgrade that helps avoid pre-ignition, and supports higher boost levels. Perfect for anyone planning to add more power down the line.
*The plugs will need to be gapped to avoid misfire.
ECU Tuning
If thereโs one mod that can transform your Mazdaspeed, itโs a proper tune. Tuning is required for a larger intake and a downpipe. While you may not necessarily need a tune after adding parts, itโs important to remember these 2 things: when youโre modifying a car that changes the amount of air going into or leaving the engine; or altering any aspect of the fuel system, then you will need a tune.
The best part about modding your Mazdaspeed is that each upgrade makes the car feel more personal and exciting to drive. Start with these foundational mods, and youโll be well on your way to turning your Mazdaspeed into the most enjoyable version of itself. Remember, each mod works best when paired with the right tune, so take your time, enjoy the process, and make sure youโre getting the most out of every upgrade.
