Remember when CNG (and LPG) were popular in the 70s and 80s? With the Middle East in crisis, they were a cheaper alternative to petrol. The government offered low-interest loans to convert vehicles to CNG but even then, the cost of converting wasn't cheap. In Auckland, the first public refuelling station opened at Papakura and a host of companies converted their vehicle fleets to CNG. New Zealand became a world leader in the uptake of the alternative fuel, but by 1984, when subsidies were removed and the oil price was falling, Compressed Natural Gas was squeezed out of the market.
