I know a lot of you Kiwis are guilty of the first one, don’t lie. The habits killing your battery, part 2.

Big aftermarket gear, subwoofers, light bars, winches, without upgrading anything else puts strain the alternator was never built for. Nothing but short trips means it never gets enough time to actually recharge. And a worn or slipping alternator belt causes charging to go patchy without you even noticing, until the battery can’t keep up.

A lot of Kiwis are killing their car batteries without even knowing it! Make sure to follow so you don’t end up one of them.

Fitting the wrong battery for your car is the big one, wrong spec means wrong charging, and it just won’t last. Leaving a phone charger or dashcam plugged in while it’s parked draws power most people don’t even know it’s using. And parking in full sun does more damage than a cold Auckland winter ever will.

When’s it smarter to just leave the battery change to a pro?

Older cars like the Corolla, Ranger, Mazda3, Commodore, Navara, mostly straightforward. Battery’s easy to get to, standard type, nothing to reset.

Newer cars, BMWs, Mercedes are a different story. Wrong battery or skip the registration step and you’re looking at real problems, not just a bad fit.

We’re not going to pretend every job needs a professional. Just the ones that actually do.

With 35 years of experience we’ve seen the wrong model of battery get applied countless times. Save this video for later and you could save yourself a serious headache.

Not every car takes the same battery anymore. Modern cars need specific tech, AGM, EFB, sometimes even registration with the car’s computer after it’s fitted. Get it wrong and you’re not just wasting money, you can cause real problems down the line.

Does a flat battery always mean it’s faulty?

Not necessarily.

A battery can go flat because it has failed — but it can also be caused by a charging problem, something draining power while the car is parked, too many short trips, or simply leaving something switched on.

Replace the battery without finding out why it went flat and you may end up with exactly the same problem again.

Get it tested first. Sometimes the fix is as simple as a proper recharge.
