19 Year 13 students. One 1970s house. A Passive House retrofit that would make plenty of experienced builders pause.

Whangaparāoa College's new Trades Academy is giving students hands-on experience with carpentry, plumbing, electrical work and more, and their first project is already setting the bar high. Led by Certified Passive House Tradesperson Nathan Mill from Quality Build Ltd, the students are learning niche, specialist skills that will set them apart the moment they step into the workforce.

We're proud to be supplying the windows for this build, and even prouder to see the next generation of tradespeople learning what it takes to raise the standard.

Ever wondered what's inside an Ambiance by STÄRKE window frame? Let's break it down, layer by layer.

Cut open one of our frames and you'll find smart engineering behind every piece. Steel-reinforced uPVC frames that shrug off heat and noise. Co-extruded gaskets sealed straight into the frame profile, so there's no gap for air, water, or sound to sneak through.

Then there's the detail you don't always see: a second co-extruded sealing point for extra protection, welded corners (not just screwed) for a frame that won't shift or leak over time, multiple premium locks that are genuinely burglar resistant, and internal beading that helps keep intruders out while making glazing easy from the inside.

Every one of these features is doing a job. Together, they're why Ambiance by STÄRKE performs so well.

August in pictures: Visiting build sites like this one in Wellington is always a highlight. Even mid-build, no roof and full of scaffolding, you can already picture what it'll feel like to live there.

Our delivery team has been out on some tricky sites this month with very steep access, and they still got every unit in safely and on time.

Swipe through for more photos from this month.

When you're building, positioning windows to maximise winter sun and minimise it in summer is one of the most cost-effective ways to improve comfort.

Getting window placement right allows the home’s layout to work with the sun, not against it. It’s important to consider what direction windows will face, their size, how many there are, and how much sun and heat they will let into the home.

In a high performing home, the goal isn’t to eliminate glazing, it’s to balance daylight, views, and performance. An experienced designer understands how to achieve that balance so the home feels comfortable year-round, and here's how each orientation plays a role:

- South-facing windows bring in very little direct sunlight and are best kept small.

- West-facing windows should be used sparingly. Afternoon sun is low, intense and difficult to shade, making west-facing rooms prone to overheating.

- East-facing windows receive only short-lived morning sun and little winter warmth, so keep them modest in size and number.

- North-facing windows are your greatest asset. When sized and shaded correctly, they provide free winter warmth without causing overheating in summer.

Is it hard to install uPVC windows? Resident Builder Peter Wolfkamp chats with Terry Bryers, builder and owner of Bruyère Passive Homes, to see how easy it really is.

Terry has been building for years and has installed countless windows, but installing Ambiance uPVC windows at his latest build project was far easier and quicker than other systems he's used before.

Watch the video to hear Terrys verdict on the install process.

This three-bedroom home in Palmerston North is built to the eHaus Pacific performance standard. It features Ambiance by STÄRKE uPVC fixed windows, tilt windows, Smartslide doors, and a front door. All are installed with our recessed flashing kit so the units line up perfectly with the wall insulation for maximum thermal performance.

The open plan living space is flooded with natural light thanks to the Smartslide doors on each side. Even with the large amounts of glazing, the home is warm and energy efficient. The white frames throughout complement the simple Scandi style.

Designed by Designgroup Stapleton Elliot and built by eHaus Manawatu, this home shows what's possible when window and door performance is treated as a priority from the start, not an afterthought.

Not all windows work the same way, and that's by design.

At Ambiance by STÄRKE, we offer a full range of opening styles, not just the standard casement windows which are common in New Zealand. Each one serves a different purpose depending on the room, the airflow you need, and the look you're going for.

Tilt and Turn: two opening functions allow the window to tilt inwards from the top, hinging at the bottom of the frame, and also turn inwards from the side hinge. They're a convenient opening method allowing easy cleaning and secure venting.

Tilt windows: tilt inward from the top for controlled ventilation and easy cleaning, without opening fully.

Awning windows: hinged at the top and open outward, so you can ventilate even during light rain.

Casement windows: hinged at the side and open outward for maximum airflow, ideal for hard-to-reach spaces.

Fixed windows: maximise natural light and views, with no moving parts to compromise on airtightness or thermal performance.

Every style is engineered with the same uPVC performance at its core, airtight, thermally efficient, and built for New Zealand conditions.
