We visited Luftgekühlt Tokyo yesterday — what a show! 🇯🇵

Incredible cars, great people, and an amazing atmosphere right in the middle of downtown Ginza. A perfect backdrop for some of the best air-cooled Porsches around. It was also great chance to showcase some of our work.

Tokyo did not disappoint.

🔧 Another Engine Saved By DGRE — Gen 1 5.0 Coyote Reborn 🐺🔥

Earlier this year, this Gen 1 Ford Performance 5.0 Coyote suffered significant fire and water damage – the kind of incident that usually sends an engine to the scrap heap, but not this one, this one had a future. We’ve just completed a full rebuild for a “very special Mk1 Cortina project”, restoring the engine back to life and adding some DGRE improvements.

🔥 Rebuild Highlights

* Engine fully stripped
* All damaged components replaced or reconditioned
* Rebuilt largely to “original Gen 1 specifications”
* Updated with **superseded / improved components** where the OEM parts have progressed
* Fully cleaned, machined, measured, balanced and reassembled to DGRE standards
* Now running strong and ready for a very unique Mk1 Cortina build

Seeing a modern 5.0 Coyote heading into a Mk1 Cortina is something special — a blend of classic Ford heritage and modern performance. Always satisfying to bring an engine back from the brink and know it’s about to power a one-of-a-kind machine. 💪 If you've got a challenging rebuild or a project that deserves the best, “DGRE can help”

Back in 2005, Toyota New Zealand planted a tree — the Toyota Racing Series. It was created to test and develop New Zealand’s next world champion, following in the footsteps of our first, Denny Hulme, the 1967 Formula 1 World Champion.

Our journey with the series began in 2004, when we were tasked with building and developing the very first Toyota 2ZZ-GE engines for the championship at Lynn Roger's Automotive. Fast-forward to 2015, when we took the leap to step out on our own and establish David Gouk Race Engines (DGRE). Our very first customer? Toyota New Zealand, with an order to rebuild 20 race engines — the work we had proudly carried out for them for the previous decade.

Unknowingly, in that initial batch of engines, we built one that would be fitted into an FT50 driven by a young Lando Norris in the 2016 Toyota Racing Series.

As is always the case at DGRE, we take our job seriously. Our focus has never changed: produce powerful, reliable, consistent engines so the driver’s skill is what’s truly on display. We simply provide the engineering that helps make it possible.

And today, that tree Toyota planted all those years ago has borne its fruit, with Lando Norris winning the 2025 F1 World Championship. We’re incredibly proud to have been even a small part of the fabric that helped shape a series known for producing world-class talent.

Our work continues, and we hope to see a Kiwi added to that world champion list in the future. And as always, our favourite season?

The next one.

🏁 A Special Visit from Toyota
Today was a milestone day at David Gouk Race Engines (DGRE) as we welcomed Mr. Tomoya Takahashi, President of Toyota Gazoo , along with members of Toyota Japan and Toyota New Zealand to our workshop.
Mr. Takahashi is a true car enthusiast, and we were proud to showcase our work with the Toyota 8AR-FTS and the legendary 2ZZ-GE engines — projects that represent over two decades of collaboration with Toyota New Zealand. We also had several of our air-cooled Porsche engines on display, demonstrating the same meticulous attention to detail we apply to every build.
He remarked that our small but dedicated team reminded him of Takumi – Japanese master craftsmen – an honor that perfectly reflects our own philosophy: DGRE = “Excellence is Expected.”
This visit carries extra significance, as 2025 marks 21 years of David Gouk’s involvement in building race engines for Toyota New Zealand, and also 10 years since DGRE was founded in 2015. It’s a decade of pushing boundaries, solving engineering challenges, and delivering performance engines built to the highest standards.
We are grateful for this recognition from Toyota Gazoo Racing and look forward to continuing to deliver

Dear Followers,
On Saturday 6th July 2024, we had a fantastic day at our facility. Our team of David, Isaac and Amanda, proudly hosted a group of 50 plus people from the Porsche Club New Zealand. It was a great opportunity to showcase our Porsche Engine Program, with the highlight being the 4 litre Porsche 964/993 "GOUK 4.0 RS Touring". They got to learn about the entire Engine build process, the Gouk way, from design, development, manufacturing, assembly, and testing.
We showed the group the latest technology that we employ in our builds, from CNC machining to exotic 3d Printed Inconel exhaust collectors to 3d printed titanium components. Another aspect of the visit was to showcase our other work, that we well known for, The Toyota 8ARFTS engines, as used in Castrol Toyota Formula Regional Oceania Championship, being car people they found this fascinating. It was also a great opportunity for our customers to show off their Porsche engine builds that we are carrying out, to their fellow enthusiasts. In keeping with the German theme our good friend Greggor Haeberlin, was the Chef on the BBQ, cooking a fine selection of German sausages for the folk's and the good people from Loco Espresso kept the crowd cafenated in their cool Vw Kombi coffee ☕️ van.
We got some great feedback from the attendees, with our Gouk 4.0L engine being described as a Singer on steroids! It was also good viewing in the carpark, with a fine selection of Stuttgart's finest on display. It was a great day! We look forward to our next Openhaus.

Dear Followers,
Its been a busy time in the Porsche division after completion of all the Toyota 8ARFTS engines for the Castrol Formula Regional Oceania Championship.
The CNC has been flat out for weeks producing our latest batch of Billet heads ready for shipment this week. If you would like to reserve a set of billet heads for your 964/993 Porsche engine project, please make contact as we have a batch currently underway for delivery in late January.
We have also been busy preparing to dyno an aircooled 911 2.4 engine this coming week. We are dynoing it as a baseline, as we are currently building the customer a 2.7 engine and wanted to know exactly where we made improvements.
Work continues on the GOUK RS Touring 4.0 engine, which we will be releasing early next year. This has been an accumulation of 3 years of work to date, with a very dedicated team, CAD designers, Mechanical engineers, Electronics engineers , with one goal, of producing the highest performing 993 based engine road and track engine. It is very detailed with no stone left un turned, no detail to small. Here is a sneak peak 👀 These will be sold as complete assemblies once dyno, street and track testing is complete.
Other shop projects are coming together nicely, Ford V6 ready for dyno. Lamborghini going together currently, along with numerous other Toyota and Porsche engine projects in various stages.
In later January we will be at attending all 5 rounds of the Castrol Toyota Formula Regional Oceania Championship to support all the engines. Busy Times,
Until next time, Have a Merry Xmas and Happy New Year, and Thanks for the on going support as we continue to build excitement well into 2024 and beyond!

Dear Followers, Today we had the great privilege of showing a delegation from TOYOTA GAZOO Racing New Zealand and The Toyota Motor Corporation Japan, our humble facility where our team produces and maintains all the Formula Regional Oceania Championship Engines. Included in the TMC delegation was the chief engineer for the Toyota GR Yaris, Naohiko Saito. He was very interested in the development of the Toyota 8ARFTS that we undertook in 2019. Being a group of real car enthusiasts/Petrol heads, they were also interested in our other engine projects, from Porsche's to Lamborghini's. We also got to show them our earlier work on the Toyota 2ZZ-GE engine that was used in the Toyota Racing Series from 2005-2019. During the visit we ran a Formula Regional 8ARFTS on the Superflow 902s Engine Dynamometer and showed them our other inhouse manufacturing and engineering capabilities. It was a great opportunity for our team. Here are some pictures from the visit. Thanks for Following!
