We've just announced the outcome of our Top Technician programme - an annual celebration of the skilled technicians across our group. It was awesome to see the people that form the hard-working backbone of our business acknowledged by managers and workmates. A wide range of nominations were narrowed down to a top ten with three finalists rising to the top.

Massive congratulations to Ami from Palfinger NZ for taking out first place, and Willem and Jesse from Truckstops for a close second and third. A great way to end the year!

It's Mental Health Awareness Week and today is all about being active and moving to support mental and physical wellbeing.

We chose day one of Mental Health Awareness Week to kick off our third Moveathon step challenge – and this time our teams are competing in a region vs region Super Rugby themed event. Some people go hard, while others just concentrate on doing a little more than yesterday – but everyone benefits. Cheers to our charity partner Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand for all your mahi bringing the five ways to wellbeing to life through this annual awareness week.

We’re proud to support technician development through initiatives like the Hino Skills Competition – a global event that starts locally and builds real capability. Over four months, techs across NZ compete in three online modules followed by a practical component, with a trip to Japan on the line. The 2024 winners, Leon and Cass, visited Hino’s Chainon 21 world-class training centre, Koga assembly plant, and a Japanese Hino dealership – an unforgettable experience.

As Leon’s manager Dan Parker, Branch Manager at Truckstops Whangarei, says: “It’s a great way for apprentices and techs to upskill and grow – and it lifts the whole team.”

The 2025 competition is underway. Good luck to all our participants!

As TWL nears its 60th year supporting New Zealand’s transport industry, we’re honouring some very special team contributions—totalling six decades of service!

Huge congratulations to our long‑service legends:

⭐ Mike Honor (Nelson) – 20 years
⭐ Dwayne McKenzie (Invercargill) – 20 years
⭐ Paul Butler (Hastings) – 20 years

As Dwayne puts it, it’s been “an awesome ride so far… working with great customers and the fantastic TWL team.” We also celebrate John Sexton, retiring after 32 years. John helped build our auto‑electrical division—bringing in top names like Hella, VDO, Bosch, and Blanco. He’s still connected with the very customers he served from day one—proof that people come first in everything we do.

📸 Our photo features familiar faces—past and present. Thanks, John, for sharing it!

And a huge thank you to Mike, Dwayne, Paul, and John for living the TWL promise to customers around the country - your local transport partner.

We recently celebrated two of our transport team members for their focus on upskilling and growing their careers.

Cristy Grant, Auckland Distribution Centre Team Leader for Parts has recently been awarded a 2025 MITO/Inspiring Futures Foundation Business Skills scholarship to complete for MITO’s New Zealand Certificate in Business (First Line Management) Level 4. A great achievement. “It’s great to have the support of my team and manager, so that I can have time off to study,” said Cristy.

Also, congratulations to Sharn Way for putting in the work to completing his MITO New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Parts and Accessories (Level 3).

Well done to you both!

Our team is very proud that the Volvo FH16 780 was named 2025 International Truck of the Year Australasia (ToYA) at the Brisbane Truck Show. The panel included Tim Giles, former editor of PowerTorque magazine and Dave McCoid, Editor of New Zealand Trucking. Tim Giles commented: “780hp and 3,800Nm are impressive numbers… (which) definitely become real when the driver puts the truck to work, this level of power and torque makes tough freight tasks a relative breeze.”

There are units on the ground in New Zealand right now, with more in the pipeline to fill customer orders. “It’s an incredibly exciting time to be a part of Volvo Trucks”, said Scott Holt, General Manager, MTD Distributors (Volvo Trucks NZ). The last couple of years have seen the addition of a number of new vehicles and features to the Volvo Trucks range, from the sleek new powerful FH Aero to the FH16 780. That’s what we call Driving Progress.”

As a proud supporters of Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand, it was great to see our teams walking the talk when it comes to zero tolerance for bullying and harassment across our 60+ sites last Friday. Truckstops branches marked Pink Shirt Day by using pink job cards and our Continental Cars dealerships and TWL branches turned their invoices pink! Going by the wide range of photos that landed in our Diversity & Inclusion inbox, we can definitely say that you all made a statement!

Last Friday, our teams said a final farewell to the site in Hornby that they’d shared with Terra Cat for close to 55 years (originally the Gough Group family headquarters) and celebrated the opening of our new joint support office at Waterloo Business Park.

After years of planning and 12 months of construction our Christchurch teams have all settled into their new homes. Our TWL , Volvo Trucks New Zealand and Mack Trucks New Zealand, Truckstops and Distribution Centre teams successfully moved in late 2024, Palfinger NZ, Hino NZ and EAPS teams shifted over Easter, and our support office teams joined them last week.

The new building was officially opened by Sime Group Chief Executive Officer, Jeffri Davidson alongside Sime Motors NZ Managing Director Pat McKenna and Terra Cat NZ Chief Executive Officer, Chris Heaton.

Thank you everyone for your hard work and good humour during our moves!

We loved being part of the George Begg Festival last weekend - a celebration of the golden age of Kiwi motorsport and local legend George Begg. It was great to see our car and truck brands side by side, on display and on the track at Teretonga Park Raceway.

Sime Motors invited the Ferrari Owners Club who joined us bringing 19 Ferraris with them! Porsche were among the European brands on and off the track at Teretonga Park Raceway, along with all the well-known NZ and Australian touring cars, and of course, world-class drivers including Greg Murphy, Hayden Paddon and Steven Richards.

We are proud of our partnership with HWR Group and were honoured to be able to support our customers on their home ground. HWR brought both Volvo and Mack trucks from their fleet to join the celebrations. A huge thanks to the teams at HWR Group and the Ferrari Owners Club for their support.

Check out the Winton Cranes Volvo FM460 with a Palfinger out on the centre track, in the very busy role of the recovery truck.

A huge thanks to our suppliers, industry partners, customers, and teams. Yesterday we hit our $150,000 fundraising target for Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand. It took 12 months of hard work and bright ideas – most recently in the form of the 'Gear Up for Mental Health' auctions which raised $14,139.

Together, we’ve supported our friends at Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand in their work to uplift the mental health and wellbeing of everyone in Aotearoa New Zealand.

A big shout out to Alcoa Wheels, Rhino Group, J.W. Speaker Corporation, Donaldson Filters, PSL Fire and Safety, PACS, Doonans Cleaning Rag Service, Century Batteries NZ, HW Richardson Group, Allied Petroleum, Continental Cars Porsche, Continental Cars Audi, Continental Cars VW, BMW Motorrad New Zealand, Hino NZ, Palfinger NZ, Volvo Trucks New Zealand, Mack Trucks New Zealand, UD Trucks New Zealand, TWL, Long Haul Publications (New Zealand Trucking magazine) Autotalk.co.nz, MediaWorks New Zealand, AdTorque Edge, Scratch, Trade Me and everyone else who has supported us.

And just like that, a five week focus on wellbeing and movement is over. 55 teams across our businesses have just taken part in our annual Sime Motors NZ Move-a-thon – an inclusive but competitive virtual event to walk, run, cycle the length of New Zealand, and back.

Our winning team from Truckstops Branch 25 in Mount Maunganui, covered a remarkable 4,947kms between seven team members – and most report feeling better for it!

But this is an event with many winners. Teams have connected by walking together, people have hit personal goals around weight loss, exercise and stress management, and there’s been a chance to laugh and support each other at a tough time against the backdrop of a challenging market.

A massive congratulations to everyone involved – we’ll be doing it bigger and better next year.
