Four-wheel drive. Two wheels temporarily on holiday.

This special obstacle lifted one front wheel and the opposite rear wheel, leaving the Bukhanka balancing diagonally. A perfect way to feel how the suspension, open differentials and differential locks behave when traction disappears.

Slowly balance across, lose grip, engage the diff locks and immediately feel the difference. Proper off-road training, with a slightly uncomfortable view from the driver’s seat.

Flevoland 2024 had the Bukhankas deep in mud and tucked between the trees, exactly where things tend to get interesting. A bit of pushing, a bit of digging, and then straight on again, with the forest watching like it had seen this kind of teamwork before. Mud suits these vans, but it suits the people around them just as well.

Plenty of room. If your definition of “plenty” is a few centimetres.

Crossing the metal bridge meant approaching at exactly the right angle. From behind the wheel you could see almost nothing, so there was only one option: ignore your instincts, trust the spotter and follow every hand signal. The Bukhankas fitted. Just.

Bukhanka: literally means “loaf”.

Spaarnwoude was all warm air, loose sand, and Bukhankas charging that hill like none of them had anything to lose.

Dust everywhere, people laughing, and enough crossing around to make the whole meeting feel like one long good decision mixed with a few questionable ones.

No deep mud this time, just summer, noise, and that perfect kind of chaos old UAZs seem to create on their own.

Some meetings do not need drama, just a dusty hill, good people, and vans that keep showing up.

From above, the Overijssel campground looks like a proper Bukhanka village, every van in place and every corner carrying its own bit of fun. The 2024 Aanmodderaars weekend had that easy kind of chaos that only works when everyone understands the assignment. A drone shot like this proves some gatherings are best appreciated from a slight distance and a wide grin.

The challenge was about pushing the limits in a controlled environment. Stay calm, move your head with the bus, do not steer uphill and trust the instructor. Easy in theory, extremely tense in reality.

Leende gave us one of those moments you could not plan if you tried.
Our rough little Russian convoy rolled straight into an American military vehicle meeting like both sides had taken a wrong turn in the best possible way.

Different machines, different history, same smell of fuel, dust, and people happily staring at old metal.

You could not make it up, one field, two worlds, and a lot of grinning in between.
