Z USA przez Holandię prosto do JustRem. Mercedes 500 SL R129 i historia „trudnego przypadku”.
Samochód może poczekać, a my możemy wrócić do niego wtedy, kiedy mamy przestrzeń, żeby spokojnie przeprowadzić diagnostykę.
R129 postał więc u nas chwilę. A razem z nim rosła legenda o wyjątkowo trudnej usterce.
I właśnie ten pomiar skierował diagnostykę we właściwą stronę.
Bez zgadywania.

From the USA to the Netherlands and eventually to JustRem. A Mercedes 500 SL R129 and the story of a “difficult case”.
From time to time, we work with a company specialising in classic cars imported from the United States. We step in when one of their projects needs additional diagnostics or simply another pair of eyes.
This time, it was a Mercedes-Benz 500 SL R129 with the 5.0-litre M119 V8.
The car arrived from the US as a non-running project, together with quite a history of previous repair attempts. The cause had already been investigated in America and even one of the expensive modules had been replaced, but the Mercedes still refused to start. After arriving in the Netherlands, the owner and his team also tried to bring it back to life.
Still no result.
We have a very good working relationship with the owner, and projects like this come without unnecessary time pressure. The car can wait until we have the space to give the diagnostics the attention they deserve.
So the R129 spent some time with us. And while it waited, the legend of the exceptionally difficult fault continued to grow.
And stories like that can influence the way you approach a problem.
When you know how many people have already tried to solve it and which components have already been replaced, it is easy to start looking for an equally complicated answer.
When the Mercedes' turn finally came, we did something very simple.
We put its history aside and started again from the beginning.
Previous measurements with a multimeter showed the expected voltage, which had directed attention towards the electronics and control modules.
We also tested the circuit under load.
And that measurement pointed the diagnostics in the right direction.
Because seeing the correct voltage on a meter doesn't necessarily mean the circuit will behave the same way when it actually has to do its job.
The cause was found. The fault was repaired.
And after a long journey from the United States and many previous attempts, this Mercedes finally did what everyone had been waiting for.
The M119 started.
Five litres. Eight cylinders. The R129 was running again.
This car left us with a useful reminder.
Repair history matters. It can provide valuable clues, but it shouldn't perform the diagnosis for the mechanic.
Sometimes the most complicated case doesn't need another replacement part. It needs a clear head and a return to the basics.
And that is exactly why we also enjoy working on cars that reach us after previous repair attempts haven't solved the problem.
No guessing.
