Turkish pipeline components delivered to King's Lynn: Vessel design matters for regional port access

When moving bulk project cargo, like these large pipeline segments, getting the cargo across open water is only half the challenge. Another major test is delivering it directly to regional secondary ports with tight draft limits and tidal windows.

These shots by show the Vega Luise navigating the River Great Ouse toward King's Lynn, fully loaded on deck.

From a design perspective, handling high-volume deck loads in shallow waters requires a fine balance between:

🏗️ Port accessibility

Decarbonizing European short-sea shipping isn't a one-size-fits-all challenge. It requires scalable platforms.

A recent sighting of Wilson ECO I in port offers a direct look at the first of six CIP3800 vessels designed for Wilson. At the same time, the first of eight larger CIP6300 vessels is reaching completion at Cochin Shipyard.

For fleet operators, expanding deadweight capacity on a similar design platform yields distinct operational advantages:
🔹 Optimized Hydrodynamics Across Sizes: The 6,300 DWT variant applies the low-resistance hull form established in the 3,800 DWT design, maintaining low fuel burn per ton-mile.
🔹 Standardized Engine Room Layouts: Shared electrical and mechanical systems across the 14-vessel fleet streamline crew training, maintenance protocols, and spare parts management.
🔹 Targeted Route Allocation: The 3,800 DWT vessels handle shallow-draft and restricted-access ports, while the 6,300 DWT units maximize throughput on high-density European coastal routes.

The combination of active operational data from the CIP3800 and upcoming deliveries of the CIP6300 demonstrates how standardized design platforms de-risk fleet modernization.

We recently brought our team, partners, and kids together at EM2 in Groningen for our annual summer party.

It was an evening dedicated to our community. Between great food and live music performed by our own colleagues, we took a moment to show our families what we have been building together. Seeing the kids react to the ship designs their parents work on is always a highlight.

Our Engineering Scope for CBM-Hybrid Workboat KRATT

Last week the 38-meter multipurpose workboat KRATT has been delivered to the Estonian State Fleet! Designed to handle everything from buoy maintenance and icebreaking to scientific research and SAR, KRATT demonstrates how public fleets can consolidate operations into a single platform.

🚢 CIP3800 Platform Goes Fully Electric ⚡️

The CIP3800 is already one of our most successful standard designs, with numerous vessels built and actively trading. From its inception, the CIP platform was engineered with modularity in mind, allowing propulsion systems to evolve alongside fuel availability and route requirements.

To demonstrate what's possible on dedicated coastal routes and green corridors, our research and engineering teams have developed a 40 MWh Full-Electric configuration for the CIP3800 platform:
🔹 Proven Hull Efficiency: Uses the exact same low-resistance hull lines validated across dozens of active CIP vessels.
🔹 Cargo Space: Retains the signature single box-shape with 4,737 m³ hold and 3,200 t cargo intake.
🔹 Balanced Weight Distribution: Features an intelligent forward/aft split battery architecture to maintain natural trim without needing extra ballast.
🔹 Modular Power Options: Expands the CIP lineup alongside our Diesel-Electric and Methanol-Ready configurations.

Whether a route calls for conventional diesel-electric efficiency, alternative liquid fuels, or battery power for zero-emission corridors, the CIP3800 platform adapts to the challenge.

With an industry full of history, we have the advantage of drawing inspiration from the past. 🌊

Melody joined Conoship as an intern ready to re-imagine the possibilities of cargo shipping. Her idea was to pull inspiration from ancient sailing vessels, like tea clippers, and integrate some of their characteristics that made these vessels very efficient under sail. ⛵️

The goal was to investigate whether these design features can improve the hydrodynamic performance of modern sailing cargo vessels.

Naval architecture usually lives on screens, in CFD simulations, and inside towing tanks for month before it every touches the water.

So when our team in Rotterdam walked out the door last week and saw Echo Petra docked right at the Parkkade, it was a moment worth stopping for.

She is one of the CIP3800 vessels for Vega Reederei and chartered by Echoship. Seeing her handling active operations in European waters brings the drawing board into the real world, next to one of our offices.
